We had the discussion on luxury items last week, but now I'd like to know if there are any other odd items that you've found useful while in the backcountry.

Zip ties? What for?

Flagging tape for tracking?

How about extra mouth reeds?

I've got the above three on my list now, but do I need them?

I always carry zip ties, they weigh next to nothing and the possibilities for use in the backcountry are endless...

Tent repair, pack repair, hanging front deer quarters, attaching items to pack, boot lace repair, attaching tags to game, securing game bags, you just never know...

Zip ties literally weigh nothing so I don't see why you would leave them behind..

I always bring flagging tape and use it often.. If you want you can buy the super light kind. I take about half of it off so it only weighs about .5oz: http://www.gofastandlight.com/Biode...Tape-Ribbon-in-Orange/productinfo/SU-BIOTAPE/

I would bring one extra mouth piece top, if that..

That's not a bad list to fret about, it's literally only about 1.5-2oz total so it doesn't realllly matter

I always carry a roll of electrical tape. It stretches better than duck tape and I've used it for several things over the years, including bandages!

To answer your question in practical terms you must first address the applications for these items as they may be absolutely essential. For example, zip ties work well for restraining people who would otherwise be a challenge to control as you drag them into the backcountry. Flagging tape is helpful should you wish to revisit the body at a later date. Extra mouth reed? If placed in the victims mouth as a "signature" this could be optional depending on whether you might happen upon a second victim while in the field.

a piece of reflective trailer tape used on semi's trailers and livestock trailers.
I usually wrap a 2-3' piece around a pencil or pen

If you need to find something in the dark, mark it with this.
I mark camp, where I've hung meat at the kill site and even trails to my treestands
a low beam headlamp will light up this tape like a lighthouse

i think i'm going to throw the top from a small solar yard light in the bag. i'm planning on hanging it near the tent so it might make it easier to find coming back after dark. could also bring it in for a little light in the tent. worth a try for 3-4 bucks.

All my guy lines are the MSR glow in the dark lines. Helps for finding camp at night and for not tripping over them in the dark.

I always carry two bandanas. One for wearing and the other for general camp use often to collect berries for lunch. I also carry a pencil and one of the wet/dry journals. Paper maps. I find them a lot more useful with my notes on them ;).
