Minimalist Mindset Towards Gear

I have one small pack I carry for everything. I strap it to my stand for whitetails, it gets a limb saw, pull up rope, harness, bow hanger, wind checker, bleat can and grunt tube for that purpose, certain things come out and other things go in for muzleloader / shot gun seasons then back to archery, right now it has a couple boxes of steel shot in it for geese. I keep tags, license, TP, paracord, fire starter etc in the front pocket all the time, never comes out unless it's getting used. I like to keep it simple and only carry what I need, instead of having three bags I just switch out the gear. I don't like to keep it around if I am not going to use it. That being said I have two boys that hunt so I keep things for them, buy them stuff and try and keep their gear straight and that makes me crazy ! lol

I've got 2 boys that are just getting old enough ... Man keeping stuff straight now Is going to be crazy !! I still wouldn't trade the experiences with them for anything!

Yep, you now need three sets of boots, camo, shotguns, bows, head lamps, etc ! It's all worth it though !

I'm a confirmed minimalist. I hate clutter. I finally got my gear pared down to a really nice set of basic equipment. No need for anything else, no need to upgrade, just replace stuff like boots or clothing when it wears out.

I could be an absolute gear whore if I let myself be.

Unfortunately...I'm also a gun nut. I could reasonably justify a whole room full of guns if I don't restrain myself. At this point I hunt almost exclusively with a single rifle and a single shotgun.

Kinda weird on my part, dig guns and bows, like looking at all of em. Always plotting and scheming to get another one. Too many of either one get kickin around, start gettin an itch to thin the herd.
Usually sell, give em away, or do a little horse trading..

Yes, I thinned out tons of stuff! I highly suggest "Essentialism" a fantastic book.

We buy gear/stupid shit for two reasons 1) We have been trained since we were little than spending money feels good, same with my two boys and new toys 2) most of the us only get to hunt a couple weeks out of the year, and buying new crap helps us enjoy the build up to the season.

Nailed it. For me, anyways. Working on overcoming #1.

I see a really strong trend with guys I get started into hunting to spend a bunch of money to hopefully maximize their success, usually right off the bat wanting to get a full kit of the latest and greatest camo. I tell them all the same thing. Your first big purchase should be a bow because theres always plenty of spare rifles laying around and a bow opens up so many opportunities. And then rather than spend $500 on camo gear, get an out of state tag and go on a good hunt. Then start thinking about what you actually need. It's worked so far and I think everyone's glad to have meat in the freezer and antlers on the wall rather than a perfectly matching set of camo clothes. And the next year they usually make the same decision and kill stuff in their granola hiker camo just as well.

I have a mix of gear from around 18 years old to brand new that I routinely use. If the weight penalty isnt to significant compared to the newest gear , its functional, and pretty comfy I'll use it until it explodes if I like it. I also tend to get sentimental about some gear pieces. When the older stuff fails I will happily research and buy the newest top notch gear.

Im to the point that im trying to upgrade my gear to higher quality than walmart sales rack. Im trying to use the mindset if but once cry once but with a wife and 2 young kids its not going to happen quickly . I like looking for gear and getting bang for your buck items thats going to last. I just went through all my hunting stuff and unloaded stuff thats not used.
