Area Description: The area consists of the Join Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) Military Reservation

Restrictions: The area is open to the taking of big game by permit only; small game, unclassified game, and fur animals in areas designated by the base commander; the department will set conditions under 5 AAC 92.050; a person wishing to hunt small game must have successfully completed a certified hunter education course

Up to 25 percent of the drawing permits will be issued to applicants who are qualified disabled veterans and qualified disabled active-duty military personnel; an applicant under this subparagraph must either
(i) possess a United States military physician's affidavit stating that the applicant has a 50 percent or greater service-connected disability; or
(ii) be certified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as having incurred a 50 percent or greater service-connected disability

That is the cats meow! I had forgot about that opportunity.

Why do you want to hunt on a military base?

Can give opportunity where none exist for species that I don't commonly have access to.

Also because of the level of control, it is less common to have people that are tied to the military be dicks as they share the field.

Being retired military can be like having the golden ticket for many things. Problem is I constantly forget I’m retired military and don’t remember to utilize things like this.
Thanks for the reminder! I’m going to start researching that moose hunt on Elmendorf.
I meet the criteria for a good opportunity.

I’ve never thought about hunting on a military base except in New Mexico for oryx.

Fort Polk (or whatever they call it now) in Louisiana allows deer hunting.

On paper, if the post doesn't have infantry, artillery, etc, you will have a lot less red tape to deal with, and very easy to coordinate.

Cut my teeth hunting at Carson… have some great memories, I think I would rather put my wiener in a meat grinder than go through the PITA of hunting on Carson or pinon canyon. Don’t get me wrong, some beautiful country, some nice animals, but constant closure and being at the mercy of training cycles and areas getting closed all the time… no thank you

When I hunted Carson for turkey and coyotes in the early 90s, elk and muleys seemed plentiful. Access was pretty reasonable and simple back then, but i don't know now. Pinion had some solid antelope and muleys, too. I heard the Pinion muleys had a rough spell maybe early 2000s but may be on the rebound.

Yeah definitely still critters out there. Had one guy in charge of access who was good. Then he left. Guy that replaced him was a joke. Would shut down areas all weekend and open them for when him and his buddies had tags. Even though it was somewhat regulated, it was still super crowded. Had some good times, but also some awful interactions while hunting out there
