Looking to buy a 3.5-12x40 or 4-16x42 size scope for my father. He has a 30-06 browning that he’s carried for decades and he needs a new scope. He has a rifle elk tag later this year and I’m looking at either vortex, Leopold, or Nikon and trying to keep it in the $300-$600 range. He’s 71 yrs old and this is most likely his last rifle hunt for elk hence not wanting to go too expensive on the glass. I would appreciate any advice or thoughts on different models. Considering the vx3i, prostaff 5 or 7, or a couple different vortex options as of now.

I would suggest taking him to cabelas or bass pro for him to judge with his eyes. That way his eyes pick the best scope for him.
Vortex Viper HS, Nikon monarch 3 or leupold vx3i are all great glass. Let his vision be the final judge.

I would go with a Leupold VX 3 or VX5(not sure what you pays for them).

Leupold has a great reputation, and their scopes are solid. We have about 6 of them(VX1s-VX3s) and have abused and used them for years, never had an issue.

Nikon or Burris would be second choice.

I would not go Vortex, have a few of their products and they have been nothing but trouble.

I would say a Leupold VX3i would be the way to go in the ones you've mentioned. I would add a Meopta MeoPro as an option as well. Please give us a call and we can discuss which would be best for him
