I’m trying to ditch the need for a jacket and using just a vest. How wise/dumb is this idea?
Furthermore what are your opinions on vests? I really like the Sitka shacket and fanatic vests. Is there something you’ve found more suited for this time of year? I will have an rain jacket in case of getting wet so my only concern is warmth? My hunt will start low elevation about 4500ft on the 14th and end if need in the higher elevations past 9k by the 23rd if needed to find elk.

Temps at higher elevations in September could be as low as 20 degrees at night. You will want to have a jacket with you or close by in the truck.

2 years ago we had temps in the 20s at night around the 13th of september at 8500 ft. I had 2 merino long sleeves, a puffy vest and my rain jacket on when i started in the mornings, but after walking some i would have to start shedding layers. I would recommend this setup as a minimum for layering that time of year. If you get cold easily or plan to sit and do more glassing then id bring a puffy jacket.

edit: my puffy vest is probably my favorite and most appreciated piece for hunting that time of year.

I would leave a soft shell in a second but would NOT go without your favorite puffy jacket.

Great info, what vest and puffy jackets are you running.

I have first lite gear and it’s treated me fine. I actually bought a solid color vest to wear in the winter around home since it’s so warm and light.

Last year those same dates in many regions of Idaho were quite cold. I had a merino long-sleeved undershirt, a cabela's fleece vest (somewhat thin) and a fleece jacket. I usually leave the jacket in daypack, but I had to wear it most days last year because of the cold. This year it might be 80 degrees and I won't need either.

I would pass out if I started hiking in all that clothing. I start out in a t shirt, even when it's below 30. I change out of it once I get to where i'm going. I never go anywhere without a puffy jacket. Never.

I rarely will go without some kind of puffy jacket (there just too light to not justify). But what ive actually found to be more glued to my pack is my jetstream/mountain vests. More secifically for early season my mountain vest, its so light but when put on over a merino layer like the chama or sawtooth it keeps that chill off. I thought about getting a cirrus puffy instead of my uncompagrhe this year for early season but with the possibility of temp swings down into the high twenties/low thirtys, i think id appreciate the extra warmth.

Just picked up a jet stream vest, trying to swing the finances for a nice puffy, likely gonna have to wait till next year, just gonna make due with a older heavier less packable jacket this year. If I get cold I’ll just hike harder
