Merino Undies

What is everyone wearing for underwear while in the field? I've heard good things about the first lite red desert, but the price tag is a little much for my liking. I don't mind spending the $$$ if they are good, but is there anything else that compares to the quality? Ice breaker, smartwool, etc? I would like something that won't smell like rotten cheese after the hike in.

I have been converted to Exofficio for both in the field and everyday wear.

I got the FL red desert about a month ago and so far so good. Feels more durable than my previous pair of icebreakers which shredded around the waistband very quickly.

Thanks for the links. I'll check out the exofficios. I just assumed merino would be the way to go, so I never thought to look at anything synthetic. How many days have you gotten out of the exofficios in the field? I'm hoping to only take one extra pair with me.

I've used the exofficios backpacking for day, weekend, week long and a 33 day trip. I bring an extra pair so I can wash and rotate. I usually wear them a couple days at a time. I've been venturing into merino and love it, but have had varying levels of success with boxers. I've shredded a few pairs. My icebreakers that I've been wearing this year are holding up so far. I think FL red desert will be next for me to try, though.

Every set of FL merinos ive have ripped.... too much $$$ for that to rip way too easily. Ex officios are really rugged and my choice these days.

Been wearing the FL Red Deserts for at least 5 years. Durability has not been an issue for me but I only wear them on hunts maybe 20-25 days a year. Love them...

I have FL and they are good. I prefer Smartwool Phd merinos. My experience with merino wool is that it has considerably much less stink when wearing them for multiple days vs synthetics. I love merino boxers and tops. When it is cold enough, I also wear merino long underwear from icebreaker.

I have had bad luck with merino boxers (tearing and ripping). I now wear REI, Patagonia and ExOfficio boxer briefs. In my mind, they all fit about the same and have all lasted the same amount of time. I just buy whichever happens to be cheapest at the time. I would give a slight edge to the REI brand boxer briefs now that they have been redesigned.

Another vote for the ExOfficio boxer-briefs. I've been a merino guy for almost everything, but the synthetic boxers have become my go-to underwear for everyday wear and for traveling. I bring two pairs when traveling/backpacking/hunting and handwash them each night.

ExOfficio boxer briefs and C4E merino wool boxers. The ExOfficios are awesome when doing long hikes as they breathe very well and feel silky smooth when you sweat. Plus, they clean and dry quickly.

I swear by the Duluth Trading Company Buck Naked boxer briefs. Have had Patagonia Capilene and IceBreakers merino in the past and liked both. However both of those don't really compare to the Buck Naked which I have found to be more comfortable, durable, odor free and super reasonable cost.

The company also has a ridiculous "no bull guarantee" where if you buy something and don't like it they will give you a refund.

Look up Minus33. They put boxer briefs on clearance sometimes. Love the ones I have.

Briefs and boxer briefs are very uncomfortable to me. Is there a good pair of undies that are more like the looser fit of regular boxers?
