How thick of wool do you normally choose? Im looking at core4 190 for a November/December elk hunt. Would you choose something thicker?

I don't choose the thickness/weight based on the temps, I choose it based on my exertion level. If I'm not moving at all, I might throw on some polar weight base layers with a bunch of stuff on top of them, but that doesn't happen very often as I'm always on the move. So I use a lightweight merino base then layer accordingly. Sometimes hiking in all I'm wearing up top is that lightweight base even in the teens because I'm already sweating at that point. Then when I slow down I'll layer back up.

190 weight is fairly lightweight thin stuff. I'll wear 145 to 190 weight for archery season. The thicker/heavier you choose, the more you're going to sweat when you're moving.

Good advice from 5milesback. I personally like a light merino then a mid weight fleece. The fleece dries faster.
