I have a Origin medium length action on the way with a XLR Element chassis. I need to fill a spot between my 25 Saw(comp barrel) and 300 Norma. Not into Shermans. Really stuck on 7mm Thinking around a 22"-24" barrel
25-7 PRC dont really need but would be faster than the current barrel and lighter.
7 Saum freebore set for medium action
7 Mega med action freebore
7 Prc heavy 180-195gr bullets
Would say this could be my lighter weight hunting setup. Under 12lbs

A vote for 7 saum. I absolutely love that round, everything about it is just awesome. I just shot through a barrel I had chambered jn 7saum. Having another spun up in 7saum but finally going shorty, 20” this time, compared to 26” I had. I can’t think of a better choice for a medium action, IMO.

The 26” was shooting 180 eldms at 2980fps.

What freebore on the medium?
I can't honestly remember what my freebore was set at. I picked my bullet and made a dummy round with the bottom of the bearing surface right at the neck shoulder junction. I then sent that to my smith and had him chamber. My comparator has the bto at 2.207 with a coal of 2.967. Im using Berger 175 EOL hunting hybrids.

Have you taken any game with the 175 elite hunters? I’m curious about them for this new barrel.

Unfortunately I have not with the 175 EH. Hopefully they are similar to Berger 168s, which have done well for me on taking animals.

small sample size, but the 175 worked fine on elk and gemsbok. Anecdotally the 175s did better on precision out of my saum then the 180. And with shot placement being key and all that, especially on the gemsbok, I went with the 175

If you’re stuck on 7mm, it’s worth looking at a 7-300WSM. Good brass availability these days, lots of powder capacity, and great COAL for a medium action.

There is a 7mm WSM SAAMI cartridge, but it uses a different headspace dimension than the good 270 and 300WSM brass that’s available.

I’m playing with both 25 Pronghorn (25-300WSM) and 300WSM throated for 3.25ish COAL at the moment. Super happy with results from both with ADG brass and long slippery bullets.

Would you happen to know the benefits of 7-300wsm over 7saum? If I remember correctly, there isn’t much benefit? I could be totally wrong tho.

Lapua 300wsm brass! But I would want a reamer set up just for this brass and cortina dies. It would be quite a bit more expensive though. If Lapua made 7saum brass I would choose it.

More case capacity, but takes a medium action for the advantage to be fully realized. Good brass availability (at the moment)

Only issue i see is reamers, load data etc.

At that point the 7 Mega from sherman makes sense. 85gr capacity. Readily available brass and reamers.
