I watch/listen to Meateater again mostly because of Clay Newcomb. I get a kick out of when he and Steve “disagree” lol

I don’t know if it’s a personality trait as much as it’s a way for us to differentiate ourselves from some of the clowns that move here from say… oh, I don’t know - say the UP of Michigan.🤣

*That comment was a joke. My wife is from the UP of Michigan, and I’m assuming the “yooper” in your username was chosen because you’re from there too.
Well then you get it. Being a Yooper actually IS a personality trait 😉

Anyone else noticed that there have been a lot more misses since they started shooting the new Weatherby rifles? Even the meateater hunts series shows a ton more misses. I like the reality but that can’t be great marketing for the sponsor.
I've been really suspicious that some of their misses were scopes losing zero or not tracking. I agree on it not being great marketing for the sponsor. But I have no facts to base that on.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them aren't great shots in the first place. Shooting is a perishable skill and it's why I also think we don't see them archery hunting much anymore. I imagine they're all much too busy expanding the Meateater empire to hit the range as much as they used to.

Don’t know about the misses, but it’s impossible not to notice the shitty ejection by the rifles. On the goat episode Steve reached up to clear the brass and in another scene the brass kind of just pooped out of the port. Last season I think there was even a really bad hang up on feeding.

accuracy is only one function of a rifle, if it doesn’t feed, extract or eject as it should, it’s just as worthless in my opinion.

I stick with mauser or Mauser-derived rifles. They sling brass in a neat pile 5’ away, every time. Am well aware that plenty of other rifles also function perfectly, but on camera these weatherbys are struggling.

I liked most of em. The flintlock show was especially awesome. The slomo footage at the end was fantastic. The goat hunt was great too. Only one I didn't care for was the squirrel hunt because... Squirrels?
squirrels are delicious and a blast to hunt. Especially with a good squirrel dog.

More often then not his shows are relatable and obtainable to many hunters. I think guys are getting tired of seeing Joe and His wife lamenting on how hard it is for them to deer hunt in their 1500 acre farm, while the poor SOB watching has to beg for permission to hunt his aunts 29 acres who he does not really even like.
Shooting squirrels to rabbits? fuk yea I can watch and relate to that. We need more shows like meat eater not less

Hopefully, it generates interest in people looking for opportunities near their own homes in the east/midwest and on private land.
Here's the problem with that wish....September and October are the peak hunting seasons out West. There's pretty much nothing to do here in September and not much worthwhile until late October when the rut gets going. We can have our cake and eat it too.

The fad may ebb a little but as long as people have disposable time and income they will travel to hunt. It's just a new reality to the hunting world. Mapping tech is probably the #1 factor to blame. I think the influencers are pretty far down the list. Word of mouth is probably a far more significant factor than influencers. It's hard to hide a product as fun as Western hunting. I don't expect many OTC non-res tags to exist out West when my kids start hunting.

You'd love my 8mm then.

Been less and less interested in the Meateater content. Every once in a while they have a great podcast or a really interesting episode but the last few years it's definitely turned into the "Steven Rinella Show". I can applaud what they've accomplished but I'm not into their ego. Probably comes with having your own TV show for 15+ years but even their banter on the podcast just makes me cringe.

I stopped watching hunting shows and listening to podcasts a few years ago. Meateater included. What they are doing just doesn't interest me.

As someone who has really only hunted Alaska, I find the footage of what they do down south fascinating. Riding around on mules watching your dogs tree squirrels? That would be a blast to me, I've never heard of such a thing. What I like about his show is a lot of episodes they don't connect, but instead of just tossing it, they air it anyway and show the process, the ups and downs. Dude is living the dream and taking his buddies along with him.

Most of the hunting shows I happened to see in the past were just some dudes sitting in a blind at a corn feeder and getting so pumped about shooting deer that came in to snarf up the free grub on some private ranch, that crap was lame.

I've noticed this too, however I dont think its all that recent. Some of his older episodes they dont show kill shots either. I'm not sure if its miscommunication with the camera guys or its intentional. A few of his camera guys arent even hunters. You never hear any communication between hunter and filmer like in other shows. "Are you on him?"

Idk, I cringe when I hear the hunter ask "are you on him?" in other shows. To me that tells me the guy isn't hunting unless the camera can catch it. I'd rather the cameras be along to get what they can get vs the cameras being the point of the hunt.

Correct. The obsession with “getting it on film” changes the scenario to one that feels like voyeurism.

I've noticed this a lot since they got the partnership with Weatherby. That and some poor target shooting in the episode with the MLB player mule deer hunting last year (easily the most cringe worthy episode ever in the series) always makes me laugh when I realize they are trying to sell those rifles. If someone is watching that show to try to pick a reliable, accurate rifle the shows does a good job showing that those are not what they are looking for.

Janis talked about having a feeding issue and malfunction on his sheep hunt also. I have noticed this also since they partnered with Weatherby. I thought some of the misses recently were probably due to them not having the time to shoot all that much.

I don’t watch many of the shows themselves, but will occasionally listen to a podcast if the topic or guest interests me.

Because I haven’t seen many of the shows, I haven‘t seen the issues being discussed about Weatherby rifles. But, I do know someone who is a component of the show.

I will say that the person I know has over time has developed an expertise that has allowed themselves to be considered an authority and regular on the show. However, without giving too many specifics, I can say that this person hasn’t been an “expert” in hunting/fishing for long, and many people (and especially those on this forum) would have decades more experience than the person I know.

Essentially, the person I’m referring to got started in hunting/fishing later in life and only had marginal skills at both. This person eventually progressed, but isn’t someone I’d consider particularly adept or skilled even now. And, more specifically, gained their skills by being provided with a mentor and opportunities that a lot of regular sportsman would never have access to.

To make these statements relevant to the discussion of Weatherby rifles, I would give benefit of the doubt to Weatherby on accuracy issues because the person I know isn’t an accomplished shooter. In terms of fishing, I’m not even sure they can double haul cast, but they are considered an authority.

In short, I think the Meat Eater crew are probably not a whole lot more accomplished than a lot of hunters / anglers out there, but because they have created a brand for themselves - they’ve begun to be seen as experts. Based on what I know, in my opinion, you may be able to put a Weatherby rifle in the hands of someone on this forum, and they may be able to make the shot a Meat Eater guy missed.

I don’t want to sound overly critical of the show or the crew because they’ve never come across as elitist to me or even sounded like they are boasting about the opportunities they’ve created for themselves. Regardless of what age someone picks something up and their natural aptitude for it, what really matters is the effort they put into It. From what I can tell, the Meat Eater guys all seem passionate, and I don’t begrudge them for their success.
