Meat Hauling - Inside or Outside of the Bag?

I recently picked up a DT1 and will be using it for the first time on my Mom's once in a lifetime elk hunt next week. I've only had the pack for about a week and haven't had much time to practice with it, but I'd like to use it to haul some meat if needed. I haven't picked up a grab-it or meat bags from Kifaru yet, but I did get a set of TAG Bags. What is the best way to haul boned meat and whole quarters inside and outside of the bag? I'll be hauling full quarters on this hunt, but I'd like to get a dry bag that works for hauling quarters and boned meat to keep myself and the pack clean.

The TAG BAG is perfect for what you are doing if you cut off Shoulders and Hams and bone the Loins neck and Rib meat.

Get that meat as close to your back as possible. That means inside the pack .

To be honest if you are worried about blood and smell, use a contractor trash bag to line the inside..

You will be able to load more meat than you can carry I'll bet.

The GenII hanging meat bag will hang inside that bag and will hold an Elk hind quarter just fine. It will sit up pretty high and with the bone removed at the knee, will be above the head 10" or so. I use the GenII attached directly to the top bar on the Bikini and no pack bag. My partner dropped the other hind quarter in his T1 without the GenII. Both methods worked fine.

Where does it hang from when using it inside the bag? What type of material is the GenII hanging meat bag made of? I won't get it in time for this hunt, but I could probably make something similar to get my by for now. Can someone take pictures and give me an idea on the dimensions? When using t

There should be 2 loops inside the bag near the top. The G hooks will attach there. On the bikini frame, the loops are on the ends of the vertical frame stays. I'll take a pic of the GenII and bikini when I get home. Not sure of the mtl but it's heavy duty.

On the Kifaru web site there is a picture of it attached to a frame and it also gives dimensions. Go there then hunting/accessories/meat bag. Be aware that it is not leak proof so you'll still need something to keep blood contained unless you are able to seam seal it. It works well to keep things high in your pack, not just meat.

My std hunt setup; GenII with Kryptek puffy and 3L bladder inside, side zip long pocket underneath holding all hunt/safety/kill kits.

After I killed my bull I just moved the puffy to the long pocket, loaded the hind quarter and head, then headed out.

This last weekend was my first time packing meat with my Bikini T2. I put the bone in quarters in quarter bags and then lined my pack with contractor garbage bag. Put extra shirts in bottom of pack and once straps were tight I was good to go. Might try to add the hanging meat bag for next year but I didn't feel like weight was too low on my back as is.

So did you keep the water bladder in the gen 2 with the meat, or am I missing something?

I wouldnt worry about blood on t he pack. I packed out 2 animals last week by just throwing the TAG bag full of boned meat in my DT2. First one was on Wed. I didnt clean the bag and packed the other on Sat. Threw the bag in the washing machine Sun and it came out looking like new.

No, I pulled the bladder out and it rode between the stays and against a para cord matrix "panel". The panel is tensioned to allow the bladder to fit between the stays but not protrude clear thru to the pads. The bladder hangs from the top cross bar via a small Velcro loop thru the bladder hook. The bladder didn't need to be in the GenII, I just stick it in there.

One thing to note, bladders with a quick disconnect hose at the bladder connection don't work well with a hind qtr and head compressing it.

On any DT system I don't understand why anyone would haul meat in the bag. Sandwich that chit, that's what it's for! Why mess up the interior of your nice pack or use trash bags that don't breathe?

We packed 2 antelope yesterday, buddies was in his DT bag. Dropped the meat bags in a 25l dry bag, then into the pack bag. Worked awesome, everything contained. Put all of mine in The genII. Lashing has proven to be a challenge with my setup. That bag of jelly just doesn't want to sinch down solid. I did fix the bladder problem by using 3l bladder with only 2l water, giving it a place to go when smashed by the meat.
SD, I don't see the meat breathing to any degree no matter where it's put. Just not enough separation or exposed surface area.
