This is just a sidenote and not any help. I started my remote life on C- rations, then K- rations, then boil baggies. All on forest fires. After a week of living on food out of a can, it was amazing how things started to all taste the same. The only thing missing was something for the heartburn and indigestion. The most valuable were the napkins for toilet paper.
I even remember when a C- ration can of chopped ham and eggs got drug into a morning warming fire and doubled as a hand grenade.
A brief exposure into surplus MREs at least for lunch was a noteable improvement. However even they tended to all taste the same after a number of days.
I have degenerated into a base camp with conventional food. There is something about a dutch oven with elk pot roast and taters that make camp worth getting back to at night.
Although I never see any backpackers where I hunt nor any remote camps, I am intrigued by the concept of sustained hoofing. I think I will continue with lunch from trail mix, a german sausage, some fluids and some candy bars.
