If you don't shoot a slider you need to Lear how to stack your pins. Meaning put 60 on the spot, look were your 40 is and move your 60 to that point. Pins don't stack mathematically either as pin gaps are increasing the farther you go beyond your last pin. Most bows with decent speed will be 92 or 93 yards stacking a full stack, 60 to 20.

I shoot a slider for hunting, but 5 fixed for tournaments. Tournaments around here max out around 110-115, so learning to stack is critical.

I didn't know that, good info. Thanks!

I like the idea of just moving the 20 pin to the bottom and setting it for 70.

This sound like the easiest option for sure. Eliminates a lot of leg work fine tuning all your pins.

I have always just lived with a 20-60 yard set up and knew exactly where to hold at 70. Anything over that was too far to shoot for me. With that said If I had the time to practice at 80 I'd let er rip. I just don't want to get outside of my "comfort" zone while hunting. I want to take a shot in the field that I have practiced many time before.

Thanks guys, now you got me thinking and I will probably start tinkering with my bow and setups. Any excuse to shoot is a good one.

7 pin site and learn how to stack pins... Or get a slider. I would at least learn how to stack them to get 80 out of the current set up.

Whats the best method for stacking pins? this is the first I've heard of it, but then again I'm a newB.

Those shooting out past 60yds. What kind of KE are we looking at? is it really an affective lethal shot to take?

I got a chance to try some pin stacking the other day. Its a very cool method for sure. Im not to sure how good this method would work in an actual hunting situation. I needed to use a reference point behind my target to move my pin to. Definitely going to need some practice at it. I was able to hit a paper plate at 70 (stacking 1 pin). When I moved to 80 yards (stacking 2 pins) I was way low, my arrow really dropped off from 70-80 yards.

Battle born, you should be low if just stacking two pins to 80. Realize the gap between 70 and 80 is bigger than than gap between 60 and 40, which is where you stacked to. For 80 try stacking 60 to 46 or 47 yards. So put 60 on target and look for where your 46-47 yard pin would be if you had one. You will start pounding the paper plate.

For hunting stacking pins is not needed with the sights out there capable of sliding. Fixed pins to a certain yardage, then slide for the longer ones.

Stacking for hunting is old school. Stacking in tournaments is mandatory if you shoot in BowHunter Freestyle class using NFAA class description. On the west coast we have tournaments with targets out to 105 routinely and some up to 117. With a 60 yard pin you must stack and be accurate as every spot counts.

Thanks for the info Rosin. Wouldn't i need to look at my 36-37 yard pin though if im shooting low using my 40 yard pin at 80 yards? Seems like I would need to aim a little higher. I will just be hunting for now but may get into tournament down the road. What is the best hunting slider sight out there?

Yes on 36-37, just getting late for me. A good quick way is to print sight tapes from an archery program out to 120. Then you put your 60 yard pin on 60 and find the yardage you are shooting on the tape and get a rough idea of where you need to stack to. This is only a reference but it will keep you from putting one in the dirt.

Patrick,

I am running a 3 pin moveable to get more distance and my recommendation to extended your range with your current sight is run 30 to 70! Differences between 20-30 once you factor in broadhead cutting area isn't much more than maybe 2" max so I would take the range extension for that personally on a 5 pin fixed sight!

I use a 7 pin slider and my 7th pin (80 yard pin) becomes my slider. I get 132 out of my current set up. Any more than that and my vanes hit my housing.

I've been shooting a 7 pin sight for over 10 years, so I actually get confused if I run a 3 or 5 pin.

Evan- the next nice day we get I am going to move to 30-70. I dont see myself getting inside 30 yards in an actual hunting situation and I will make the adjustment to 20 at the range if I need to. Sure would be nice to have a 70 yard pin.

Aron- So the only thing that slides is you 7th pin? Or does the whole gang move?

On sliders the whole gang moves so you can still utilize your peep and sight housing together. For me, I prefer the Spot Hogg Tommy Hogg 5 pin for hunting. It is built rock solid, you can get to the slider adjustment even with a quiver and you can get whatever size pins you want. There is one down fall to the Tommy Hogg, it is heavy. I don't mean like an anchor, but heavier than most comparable sights. I don't feel it on the bow as it is soething you get used to fairly quickly, but when you first pick it up you kind of think, wow it is heavy. Heavy in this case also means stout.

Doug, what size pins are you using? My Tommy Hogg will be here next weekend and I got the .19 - 3 pin small guard. I'm hoping I got the right size pins and guard

I run the 0.10's for target and the 0.19's for hunting. The 0.19's are fine, but I think the 0.10's would be as we'll. if I ordered again I would probably do 0.10's, but am not changing at this point.

Cool, I feel a little better about my decision. I always second guess myself. Thanks Doug, I know you have discussed plenty the sighting in of sliders but if I run into problems I'll probably be PMing you with questions if you don't mind

Anytime....Sliders can be frustrating at times, but once you get it figured out they are superb.
