Maven RS1.2 Shortcomings? Is There Anything Better?

You're shooting a lightweight 7PRC. The likelihood that you (or anyone really) can control recoil well enough to use over 15 power while still spotting your shots is almost zero. So the top end 15x magnification is not really limiting.

Both valid and solved by the Maven.

The complaint is that the illumination bleeds when on a high setting in low light. Which never seemed to make sense to me since if it's low light, I feel like I'd be using a low setting. But I also don't really use illumination so maybe I'm missing something big there.

PRS shooters with 22-28 lb rifles shooting tiny little 6mm cartridges spend 99% of their matches between 14-20 power as they shoot from 600-1300 yards. The reality is they tend to have 5-25, 6-36, and 7-35 scopes but that's not because they're actually using high magnification. They have reasons for it related to the magnification sweet spot of the scope for depth of field, field of view, image quality, low mirage, etc. But those aren't that relevant for hunting.

If I had up to $3,000 to spend and had your requirements I'd be looking VERY hard at a Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 with a MIL-R reticle. @EuroOptic tends to sell "like-new demos" like the one linked below. By like-new, trust me it's new. I've bought several like-new demos from EO including my EL 10x50s and NF 7-35x56.

^^^ nailed it. From zoom to ATACR ^^^I run a sub 6.5lb bare 7prc, with a Raptor 8, I don’t think I have ever dial over 12x for fur or steel to 1250, essentially most won’t see impacts at higher mag unless you have some impeccable form or harsh break

I had a coyote in a wheat field past LST at +-600-700, I could seen him fine in my Maven and my swaro spotter but couldn’t see to range with Sig 2200k…. The Maven wasn’t the weak part of the system past LST.

If you are looking to cut weight maven is great choice, nothing wrong with 4-16atacr either
Yep, that’s 100% my biggest complaint. I’d rather have it slightly slimmer and lighter. Pretty minor complaint, but still.

I would still put the 3-18X44 Tenmile above the maven if you’re splitting hairs. Even though the tree reticle on the Tenmile is a slight drawback.

It’s durable, 2oz lighter, and a touch easier to get behind with a more full, and better image.

At least to my eyes between using the two, I’d put the 3-18X44 above it.

My biggest complaint with the RS1.2 is muddy glass and decreased FOV compared to VX5/6

I appreciate peace of mind, consistent dialing/POI.

The illumination is at least 10yrs behind other scopes in its bleed on high intensity and overall crispness.

My perfect scope is 3/4x-14/15x with a 40-44mm objective. Locking turret with zero stop and durable. But it all at 18-25oz

A lot of people make a big deal about weight thinking of sheep hunting, but balance and light weight/quick pointing is important in the eastern mountains.

Recently purchased an RS1.2. I like it except for the illumination. Too much bleed over for me, but if you don't feel the illumination is needed it's a moot point. Reticles are a personal preference thing but I thought the SHR-Mil was very usea le from 3x on up without the illumination, for the most part. Did an unofficial low light test between a 4-16 ATACR, VX6 3-18, and the RS1.2. the image quality of the other two seemed a touch better but maven wouldn't hold you back any, FOV did seem a touch tighter. Would prefer a locking turret like the ATACR though.Overall I still prefer the ATACR but do prefer the Maven reticle over the MIL-R. ATACR cost another 1k, unless u run across a used one, so it absolutely should be better. Not sure the Maven has a peer in the$ 1000-$1200 slot for a Hunting oriented FFP that's known to be durable and track with a reticle that's useble across the full mag range. I think it's a good value for the $$.

As has been stated, the NF ATACR 4-16 would be a solid choice given your budget and better glass and illumination than the Maven.
