This is a field evaluation of the Maven CRS.3 4-20x50mm scope. This scope was sent to Ryan Avery for an evaluation.

The scope:

Turrets:

Elevation is revolution indicated, .25 MOA per click, 15 MOA per rev. No zero stop. Windage is not revolution indicted nor does it have a revolution stop.

Reticle: SHR-W (MOA). Has a center dot with 1 MOA increments on the windage, but 5 MOA per tick on the vertical below center. 10 MOA per side from center to the start of the thicker outer posts. Overall it is a pretty fine (thin) reticle.

Note: the reticle is illuminated, but I could not get it to show up in the lighting that I had.

Drop Evaluation RTZ and “Tracking”:

For an explanation see- Scope Field Eval Explanation and Standards

The “test” consists of three 18” drops on a mat- one left/right/top with a shot to check zero after each drop. Then the exact same thing repeated from 36”. Then three drops on all three sides for nine drops on the last part- 15 drops total. This is not “abuse”. The 18” drops are a joke really. The 36” start showing something. And when a scope make/model consistently goes through the whole thing without losing zero, and makes it through the high round count portion, failures in actual use are almost unheard of.

This one was conducted on soft soil, with a 1/2 rubber padded mat top.

The rings were degreased and installed with 65 in-lbs on base screws, and 20-lbs on ring cap screws.

Ammunition used was Federal 168gr Tru. The 20 round proof group with this ammo was 1.2 MOA.

Zeroing: Went without issue. Boresighted, fired one round, adjusted and fired the reminding 9 in the left dot. Made a final adjustment of down .25 and left .5 MOA and went to the drop portion.

Drop eval:

Total failure. It shifted in the expected direction with every drop, and 36” drops shifted farther than 18” drops.

After the drop eval, it returned to zero perfectly with no adjustments (center dot)-

RTZ: no issues at all.

At this point the scope was pulled off to test another scope.

Glass: From 4x to about 16x the glass was good and about as expected for a the LRI e range. However, it was noticeably and obviously murky above 16x, to the point that at 20x in the conditions of the day, it was at best- bad.

Conclusion:

The scope seemed to adjust correctly. The reticle is too fine and would require illumination to use in low light and broken backgrounds for most users. It failed the drop eval across the board, but- did return to zero once the drops stopped. Return to zero when dialing was good.
Overall it seems to be that it worked fine, but is fragile to impacts, and the glass clarity suffers badly above 16x.
