If you found another cartridge with a bc within .005 and velocity within 50 fps running a totally different class of bullet weight would you object to having a second rifle setup?
"Object"?
Of course not, silly question.
In truth, the premise for building a rifle is actually the same.
We both have a bullet & MV in mind to build around. You want to "match" that dope to another rifle/load. Whereas, I build in expectation of getting the most performance out of said rifle/load. Difference being, if things just work out as planned, my options remain unbridled. Meanwhile, you've painted yourself into a corner, and quite possibly could have built a better mousetrap from the get-go...
Here's what I shoot, each built for a specific purpose. Will shed some more light on why I don't waste time trying to match ballistics. Simply because, it ain't gonna happen!
.172" 30gr @ 4100
.224" 75gr @ 3600
.243" 95gr @ 2770
.243" 105gr @ 3100
.264" 130gr @ 3200
.264" 140gr @ 3080
.284" 162gr @ 2970
.308" 215gr @ 3150
I can understand
why you want to ballistically "match" rifles, just sayin' that is not a priority for consideration when I build a rifle. I like my stocks to "match", triggers to "match" and even reticles to "match" (or at least be similar). But I won't go so far as to try "matching" ballistics. In that regard, I "go big, or go home" and tend to gravitate toward the more capacious cartridges available for a given caliber. Also, the load always boils down to what the rifle tells me it likes best, not what will "match" something else I've got...
What happens when you load test & find an accuracy node for your new rifle that is +/- 30fps different than what you need to "match"?
What happens when you load test & learn that your barrel just doesn't want to shoot the bullet you had in mind???
What if there is a cartridge you could have built around that would have offered improved performance over what you settled on to "match"???
None of our motivations will ever be the same, and I don't expect them to be! Just offering up some alternative food for thought...
