Heading to Wyoming in September for a week of hunting. This is my first experience trying to make sense of FS maps. Im trying to find how to get from the main roads(state highways, etc) to the FS roads. Maybe I haven't found the right map that puts everything on there....anyone have any suggestions?

Buy the FS maps that cost money, usually around $13. They are the good ones, you can order them online

Most Forests also have a travel map that shows all the roads and ATV trails with there estimated open and close dates . If you can't find one online call the Forest you plan to hunt on and have them send you a travel map.

Every FS map I've ever had has all the roads on it, even those "4wd only" trails. They aren't as detailed as some other maps, but they are a good starting point for a large scale view of an area.

I think my old man just got one of the Wyoming atlases. I take it that will show both state/county roads and FS roads? I have the forest maps, just trying to get a better idea of how to get to the FS roads since google maps doesn't seem to recognize them for driving directions. Maybe it's the scaling differences between maps that's confusing me, or I'm just dumb. Could be either really. Thanks fellas

can't have too many maps as far as I am concerned,,,,as others mentioned, the DeLorme Gazetteers is what I start with for general area orientation, then the FS maps, BLM maps, and straight up Topo maps (scale dependent on area and means of hunting),,,,,,,some of the companies provide maps that are composites as well

but the better maps will cost,,,,free maps usually aren't worth a whole lot but I grab them as well - good for trails (walking, ATV, horse) as earlier mentioned,,,,,,

Forest service maps at their best are no easy to figure out. One of my favorite camping sites is next to 2 roads that cross, and you would be supprised at the number of people who stop there, trying to figure out which way to go.
