Malice Pack for Backcountry Elk Hunt?

Planning my first Elk hunt for September 2021. Looking at OTC archery in either Idaho or Colorado, and I’m slowly accumulating gear.

I’ve got a large Tactical Tailor Malice pack that I use for long rucks and the like, will this cut it on the hunt or should I invest the money in an elk-specific pack?

It’s very similar to this one.

That should work fine for your first hunt. It's going to be able to carry all your field gear and then some. If you tag out, you'll have to work out how to carry the game bags. My recommendation would be to see if you can mount an old ALICE pack frame load shelf / pack tray (it was an aluminum shelf that bolted to the outside bottom of the frame below the bag). If you can mount one of those, remove and cache the ruck, strap your game bags to the frame and hump out. Retrieve your ruck on the last trip out.

if so, I seems like I may have to make some mods to lengthen it a bit. Thoughts?

That's the shelf I was thinking of. By lengthening it, do you mean where it attaches to the frame or the width of the shelf itself?

The actual width, or the total area that items could be placed on top of it. The end result would be more square, as it seems too narrow to hold the bags as is. I could be totally wrong, but that’s why I’m here haha

I don't think you'd need to do that. You have 5 tie down points for webbing / cargo straps to cinch the load to the frame and the pack tray. The width of the tray itself should provide enough support underneath it when combined with strapping down tight the game bag. I've used a similar set up to haul 5 gallon water cans on the frames.

Before you buy the pack tray, you might want to contact Tactical Tailor and see if this tray attaches to their frame. If their frame is based on the ALICE frame, you should be GTG

I'm assuming you're a veteran???? If so you qualify for the extremely deep discount Mystery Ranch does on Expert Voice. If you get their frame, your TT ruck will fit it. I'd hate to pack an elk out of the woods without a true hip belt.

I didn’t think of the cargo webbing, that makes total sense

And the pack is actually on a standard Alice frame, so no issues there.

Currently active duty, but good to know! I didn’t know MR made frames for that pack.

This gear info is real helpful, thanks so much. The real tough part is getting the time away to scout and actually hunt, but it’ll work out eventually

Hunt what you got. I hauled mortar base plates and all k8nds of heavy stuff on an old school Alice pack. You can make it work. If you want to upgrade that pack buy an old mR nice frame and put your malice on it. Game bags carry fine inside a pack as long as you don’t mind a little blood here or there. Line the interior with a contractor bag if you have to.

Nearly all the major hunting brands do military discounts through expert voice or direct. PM me if you are having trouble getting Hooke d up.

The MALICE is a great pack and will carry anything you put in it.
