Magnum bolt face, short action, 6.5 bullet, short barrel.

My wheels are turning. Currently shooting a 6.5 PRC in a 17” barrel. Wanting to try to push a 147 eldm close to 3000 fps. Can it be done? And what case?
6.5-300 wsm
6.5-7 prc
6.5 Saum.
Or do I have to bite the bullet and go 6mm with the UM?

I’d think 6.5 saum would get you close but WSM is probably the safe bet. Could also look at a 25 since you’ll be wildcatting anyway

@huntnful had 156 Bergers going over 3200 FPS I believe with 6.5-7PRC with a 26" barrel? Basic math says an 18" barrel would be in the neighborhood of mid 2,900's so the147's could maybe crack 3,000.

It’s really not, but 2700 currently is a little slow.

Tough list of wants, paired with limitations you got there. You need to sacrifice on barrel length or action length to likely reach that speed at a medium charge weight in any decent sized cartridge.

I don't even think the 6.5-7 PRC would do it with 70gr. N570. You're just wanting too much, with too little basically.

My 20" 6.5x284 does 2850 with 140's.....and it took me some work to get there.

20 inch 6.5 saum here. If memory serves, when I tried 147s I was between 2850-2900 with H1000 but they didn't shoot so I gave up on them. Potentially could squeeze some more out with n565 but I don't shoot anything triple based. I ended up shooting 140 berger elite hunters at 2950.

When I had 25" 6.5 SAUMs 3050ish with 140s and h1000 was the happy spot. All that to concur with other folks, that's a stretch.

My gut tells me anything with that capacity is going to struggle to get a complete burn, how much who knows but would be one heck of a muzzle blast.

What's the max barrel length you will consider?

my 6.5 PRC with a 26" barrel shoots the factory hornady 147's at 3000 fps.

Mix it up a lil. I vote 6.5 Rem mag. I dunno if it would work, but I think you need to try it

You are trying to have your cake and eat it too. I think you need to compromise on something as others have said. Or wait for the 6.5 Backcountry....

I would do a 6-6.5PRC in a 18-20in barrel since you already have everything other than the bullets and the barrel. That should get a 103 ELDX or 108 ELDM around the speed you want and be relatively efficient and cost effective and a little less recoil. You would just need bullets, barrel, and a neck bushing.

I run the 147s out of my 6.5 PRC at 2910 with N565. You will need more barrel for 3000.

The only way would be to run a 6.5mm short mag with low taper and a sharp shoulder based of a norma magnum case diameter, 85+ gr case capacity. Have you saw a lapua bolt face short action? Me neither........you're asking too much. A 147 from a 17in barrel at 2900 is even asking too much at sane/safe pressure levels. 2800 is a realistic goal with that short of a tube and something that has a 3.150 or less cartridge overall length. Thats even stretching it as only a few actions can run that, most are limited to 3.000". If 3k with a 147 from a very short is you're love affair, build a long action 6.5/300 prc. Finding a supressor rated for that will be another ordeal......
