Spent some QT with the Sporter this weekend. Overall it's super easy to use. I shoot a Savage 11 in .308 and my friend shoots a Kimber 8400 WSM Montana in .300WSM. Worked great on both. We used the thick shims for both guns and had no issues. No alignment rod was included with my unit so we just dropped the bolt and bore sighted to make sure it was clear. The strap was easy to get tight enough so that even the WSM recoil didn't move the unit. Caught every shot and nicely displayed the FPS on the display. When we were done shooting we connected the XFR and it seamlessly downloaded data for easier viewing. In my opinion an XFR is required with the Sporter given the single line display. Only gripe on XFR is that you can't have the phone connected at the same time as the display. You have to shoot your string and then connect and download the data to the app. Would be nice to see it fill the app in real time.
My biggest concern with the unit is that is significantly changed POI for both rifles. It sent my tried and true hunting load 5" high. Kept nice tight group but big POI shift. It sent my buddies POI on an even wilder ride. We had two targets stacked and he swears he was aiming at bottom target first shot string (3 shots). All holes were in upper target, which would mean a POI shift over over a foot and closer to two. We couldn't believe how much it shifted so we each fired a second shot string without it on and things were back to zero. My friend only had a handful of rounds loaded up so we didn't get the chance to strap it back on and see if he really was aiming at the bottom target and got a 2' POI shift.
Will go back and have more fun soon. He is loading up a full batch of rounds so we can get a better sense of the effect on POI for his gun. Basically right now I will only use the Sporter for load validation and not during zeroing work. That's fine by me, but something to be aware of if you are considering and want to use for both at same time.
