M5 bottom metal options - help me out

I went with the UM bottom metal and mag. I went with theirs because of the mag release. It seems that it will be hard to release accidentally.

Just got the MDT hunting bottom metal in. Going to use with 3-round poly mag in an Alterra CH3.

Out of the box, mag lock is a nifty feature, and the drop lever is interesting. The anodize finish looks like garbage on everything but the mag release.

We’ll see how functional testing goes - so far the poly mags have fed 6 and 7 PRC no problem.

Non adjustable mag height latch, correct?

Yes it is fixed, you can adjust the mag release lever tension and switch the side the lock functions from but that’s it.
Do you even see yourself using that mag lock feature or is it kinda gimmicky?

It’s the only reason I’m trying it to be honest. Not having to worry about dropping a mag on accident (only done this once) seems like a nice feature. It’s the one thing people always rag on DBMs for in a hunting rifle, so makes sense to eliminate that.

Yeah, I always hear people saying that about dbm's too, but I've never dropped a mag using the APA rtg bottom metal and always have a spare mag anyhow.

I guess I could see how it would be possible to lose a mag with the traditional paddle style m5's though

I'm in need of another dbm, and am looking at the MDT, terminus, or mack bros. I just dunno if I need that mag lock feature or not.

Is it easy to unlock, and swap mags on the fly?

Please update on how you like it, this is top of my list but haven't seen much feedback on them

Unlock is just like pressing a shotgun safety - but as far as mag drop and load, not sure until I get some range time with it. I have to think that UM system is easier to actually drop the mag just from messing with their mag release paddle, which straddles the front of the trigger guard. It’s pretty dang easy to hit that release from just trying it in hand.

Just got my stock from alterra so here’s the MDT stuff installed. Poly mag is a little tough to seat up in there correctly, and they say you have to make sure the system is “unlocked” when loading, which will take some memory/training.

Is that a short action 3rd mag?

If anyone has any questions, just let us know. Thanks to all using Hawkins. Lots of good options these days! Our support team is at [email protected] We try to keep up here as much as possible, but that's a sure fire way to get someone.

Really? When? I have a fairly recent model and there is no bumper and it rattles.

It just says 2025, but supposed to take away the rattle when empty

We do have bumpers on all magazines now so when they are empty they do not move in the bottom metal. You do not need to replace the bottom metal, it's the base pad on the magazine itself that has the recess cut into it for the bumpers.

If you have an older magazine without bumpers and the empty magazine movement worries you (should be nice and snug loaded for party time) let us know.

We can be reached at [email protected]

It definitely bothers me. How do I get this bumper rig?
