at the moment i have a vx freedom 1.5-4 firedot on my .338 win mag ruger. I like having the large field of view for close quarter situations with bears on kills and in camp, but needing some zoom for a back up gun for hunters. I work in the yukon in a horse camp so I cant carry a side arm and a smaller optics is nice to have in the scabbard.

what im looking for is a greater zoom range. the 4x just isnt enough in some scenario's.
Im interested in the vx6hd 1-6 but im still looking for a bit more zoom.

any recomendations?

I have a Swampfox 1-10 that seems pretty legit. I got it in a trade. I have only read reviews, but it seems to hold up pretty well. Eventually I will get out and give it a go on a rifle.

Trijicon Credo 1-6x would be my pick. Probably your best bet on durability, reliability/ zero retention, and good eye relief and eye box for using up close.

I have a Burris RT-6 on a rifle. It has been a great scope. Really large field of view on low power. Almost as good as a dedicated red dot. Enough mag to get to 300 yards without problems. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another for an all purpose rifle or a need like you have.

my advice is to pay very close attention to the eye-relief. My credo 1-4 had insufficient eye-relief to work on a break-action in-line muzzleloader at 4x, there's no way it would have worked on a scout rifle setup.

I like the NX8 1-8 w/FCMil reticle. 1x and the daylight bright dot is quick/visible. 8x on the top end but I rarely use it past 6x. Open zero stopped elevation dial, capped windage. FFP measured reticle that's still usable on low power and give you holds on higher powers. Solid, well built scope with a small footprint. It would be my first choice.

Credo HX 1-8 is an awesome optic. A lot of LPVOs have a >1moa center dot which is a deal breaker for me. I think the NX8 is 1.25 moa. The credo 1-8 is .5 moa.

The center dot/circle in the NX8 is a double edged sword. Very quick to pick up at closer range...but also covers a fair bit of the target at distance and can limit precision/groups. Everything is a trade off.

I'd love to see Nightforce use the FC-Mil reticle with a lightly illuminated fine crosshair and .1 mil adjustments in a "hunter version" 1-8x32 or 42 NX8. ...but...."If wishes were horses, beggars would ride"

The LE5 reticle in the Eotech 1-10 is excellent. It’s got a pretty fine cross hair inside the middle 2 mil circle and then a 65MOA ring that disappears after 6x and has a tree for hold overs. Unlike most FFP LPVO’s it’s actually usable on 1x without the illumination, I can’t say the same for my Razor 1-10 or the other FFP LPVO’s I’ve had, most of them all out disappear on 1x with no illumination. They’re also a very tough Japanese optic. Euro optic is also running a sale on “like new” units for a big discount, I ordered one and it was 100% NIB.
