Lurking for a new Tikka stock

Have you seen the McMillan Mountain Tracker LR? It’s somewhere between the AG Alpine Hunter and the Rokstock in design. Negative comb, flat toe line and flat forend. I’ve only heard good things from guys that own it.

I like the Stockys VG or the KRG Bravo.

I'm big on function over looks also, but like others can't get over the looks of the Rokstok....at least yet.

How does the VG compare to similar stocks fit and finish wise? Rigidity? They have 2nds available right now for a good price, so they seem to be a real good value.

Yeah that's the one I was thinking of, but being a new account as of today I can't do anything about it for a week. So in the mean time just picking people's brains.

Seems like the rokstock is getting all the praise over here. I'm sure for good reason, but the Alpine Hunter checks the boxes for me

The Rokstok is pure refined shoot-ability. I think to fully appreciate it you have to handle and shoot one.

Lots of good stock options out there though. The Stockys are very functional, priced well and readily available. Another option I didn't see on the list is Peak44.

The bastion looks like a good option, especially at only 24 ounces. Quite a bit lighter than the competition

I'd definitely wait for a Rokstok. I had the AG and ripped a swivel stud out in the first shot with my bipod. That Rokstok really does help with the right cheek position and felt recoil.

Wood Rokstok lite has some nice curves to it.

-Rokstok is legit. Like really really good.
-McMillan mountain tracker LR is also legit. And probably the call for someone who can’t get down with Rokstok. McMillan has consistently made some of my favorite feeling stocks over the years.
-KRG Bravo is heavier, but very solid shooting.

The stockies VG would be a good call if you’re not wanting something with a negative comb. Plenty rigid when made from carbon fiber. Just make sure you’re ordering an oversized barrel channel by 1-2 contour sizes.

@Lurkin1 if you cant get over the look of a rokstock, the alterra stocks look and handle a bit more traditional, while also having a negative comb. Obviously not as aggressively negative as a rokstock, it’s 1/4” negative instead of 3/4” or whatever a rockstock is. That negative comb is the most significant part of the recoil management of a rokstock. A common criticism of the alterra is the reach to the trigger is quite long—alterra claims the new version is significantly shorter. Could be one to check out, I really like mine.

Went ahead and got the alpine hunter. I know it's not #1 in recoil management but it's a huge improvement over the factory stock. That alterra looks like a good compromise though, might have to try one out in the future

Good look’n stock. I’m on the fence between the alpine hunter and the mountain tracker LR. Curious to hear your thoughts after some time behind the trigger.

Function over appearance for sure. But I'll take a cut in a little function over a lot of appearance in some cases haha. How much extra recoil control and or other advantages do you think the rokstock has over other tall comb LR hunting stocks like the alpine hunter? Does it just turn a 308 into a 7-08 recoil control wise? I know it's probably hard to quantify but I have never been behind either stock so I'm just trying to get an idea.

Probably turns 308 into a 7mm-08 Tikka, but still a 308 in every other popular current production rifle except a Ruger American kick less than a factoryTikka. Tikkas thump

I may have misunderstood, are you suggesting that a tikka in a rokstock will recoil more than another similar-weight bolt action in a rokstock?

No clue. I've never seen a Rokstock. A Tikka in factory stocks kick harder than most other brands of same cartridge and weight.
For example, factory Tikka 308 felt recoil is worse than same weight x-bolt 6.5 pound 270 and 280.
Im saying a Rokstocked 308 probably kicks like a factory Tikka 7mm-08.

My experience is fairly limited as I have only ever shot 1 other tikka in 6.5 creedmoor a few years ago about 10 shots, the alpine hunter went on a new to me tikka 6.5 prc before I even fired a shot through it. Fit, finish, and feel is excellent. Ran 45 rounds of 153.5 berger from about 2600 fps to 2920 fps. It was real comfortable to shoot until it got over about 2850. Side by side with a christensen mesa LR 6.5 creed the christensen was a fair bit more pleasant to shoot, but that is apples and oranges cartridge and weight wise. I can't compare it to other carbon fiber stocks as this is the only one I have but compared to that christensen carbon fiber (composite) it is much lighter with less forend flex. I have a 56mm objective scope mounted to the gun that is within .050" of touching the barrel and the cheek weld is about perfect without putting too much pressure on the gun

Ah, ok. Yes, ft/lb of recoil will be identical with same gun weight and payload/velocity, but the direction that recoil goes affects how it feels, and that is entirely dependant on the stock geometry. Any stock with equal or more drop will recoil just like a tikka given same gun weight and payload/velicity. A rokstock +\- eliminates muzzle rise and cheek slap though, so regardless of what rifle is in it, it will feel like a lot less recoil. It sounds like you are particularly sensitive to the face slap if a browning is that much easier to shoot for you. I would go out on a limb and say you would experience an even greater difference going from a browning stock to any stock with a high butt and radically negative comb like a rokstock.

I have a couple rokstoks. 1 has a r700 243ai barreled action in it. That rifle is on its 3rd 243ai barrel, and the one on there now needs to be pulled and replaced. Ive had it in a Manners t2, mcmillan a5, mcmillan game scout, and an mdt chassis. The rokstok is the most comfortable to shoot, has the least muzzle rise, and feels like it has the least amount of felt recoil. Ymmv.

I've got a Peak44 Bastion that I am quite happy with. Was going for the lightest weight option I could find.

For a hunting stock I love my Rokstok. But, damn it is ugly. Form follows function I guess. For the range I love KRG Bravo. It’s just a solid and inexpensive platform that works. I’ve hauled it on more tgan one hunting trip but the Rokstok fills that role now. I wish I had a stock duplicator so I could build a few more Rokstoks from the stack of 100 year old walnut my dad has.
