Luna 6 or Cimarron or......

I'm looking for a shelter big enough to fit 2 people, stove, and gear. It will be used in all seasons and on sheep hunts.

The luna 6 and cimarron look like twins. There is not much info on the luna 6 out there, but good info on rokslide regarding the cimarron so I'm leaning that way.

A tipi or sawtooth are out of my range right now....later for sure.

Any info or suggestions would be appreciated!! Thank you!

I love the Cimarron. Coming from the GoLite SL5, the Cimarron has a ton more usable space and the two doors are fantastic.

Here is how we used it on an AK trip. However, for a hunt, I would rotate the sleeping pads 90 degrees so each person had their own door. This just worked for us because my girlfriend wanted to sleep in the nest.

In warmer, buggier, rainier weather, we both slept in the nest and had the whole other half to hang out. Probably won't have two dudes sharing a nest but you could still fit two people on one side easily.

Also, I don't have any experience with the Luna 6 but looking at it, it only has one door (although you could probably have another one added. I don't know that I like the placement of the vent as that limits the height of the door.

One other thing. The Luna 6 is square where the Cimarron is really 6(-8ish) sided. It's kind of deceiving until you see it in person.

Nice setup colonel! I was hoping for a setup just like yours. You make a good point about the height of the entrance and having two exits is a big plus for two guys.

The cimarron's shape may help it buck the wind better than the square luna. A few more guy points on the cimarron would be nice, but I could always add some.

Thanks for the pictures as well!

Here are a couple more photos that show the shape a little more. Yeah, some guy out points might be nice but it's pretty sturdy as it is. I haven't spent a ton of time in the field in it but we did ride out one fairly windy storm and it held fine. To me, the biggest trick, as you can see in the photos, is to get it up off the ground a bit. I added some tensioner extensions to the stake loops to allow for more height off the ground.

Do you raise it off the ground when you have a stove in it?

I have a black diamond beta light and it's always off 6 inches or so off the ground to limit condensation.

Great pics again....thanks a lot colonel!!

Yeah, in the photos with the stove you can see that the skirt is barely touching the ground in spots and there are gaps in others. The simple fact is that a tent like this isn't going to hold a ton of heat anyway. If the wind is blowing, I can tighten it down to the ground more though. However, even with a gap, with the stove running it's pretty warm in there. In the photos above, it was in the 20's. I ran the stove in the evening as we were laying there and in the morning to warm up a little before getting up.

In the photos where it is setup on the grass, the temps were much warmer and wet so we didn't run the stove but needed a bigger gap to minimize condensation trying to keep the air flowing.

For what you are describing I think the cimarron is the best but you will be much happier with the sawtooth when that day comes.

GFY - great pics man! Beautiful spot your in there. Good to hear the cimarron held up well.

bbrown - I agree, the sawtooth would be the ultimate shelter for my needs.

Thanks guys!

I don't have experience with the luna but I did use the Cimarron all season and one of my favorite features was the 2 way zippers on both doors allowed me to unzip them both from the top and prop open with a stick for extra ventilation

Where you just using the standard stake loops? Guessing in that third pic you had to lower the pole and pull it out really tight to get it that tight to the ground. That is the one down side is when you have to pitch it like this, you really run out of interior space quickly. But, if you are riding out a storm you do what you have to.

Just so Colonel isn't the only one with scenic Cimarron shots:D

Heh, I didn't really get too many "cool" photos of the Cimarron. I had meant to get some great pics of it setup here but never got around to it.

Yes sir, just the standard stake loops with a black diamond pole from my mega-light. I was impressed, we were at 9800ft and it was blowin rain pretty fierce

A fix back east
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ...

Thanks for the photos guys. I have an SO 8-man with a HPG stove, which is fantastic, but damn is it heavy for two guys packing it in. It's fine here when I use a canoe, but I'm really getting sold on a cimmaron and maybe a cylinder stove for pack-in hunts. I would have to get a nest for the wife since she's not interested in insects (to be fair, she grew up in South Africa where the insects are much more nasty than those in the wilds of the Adirondacks).
