Luke shank thickness will vary from one manufacture to another.
Remember that upper construction also increases structure to the entire boot, just like setting the walls of a house.
The taller upper will also create leverage making the boot easier to flex. Like a long cheater bar.

I have had the Lowa Tibets GTX for 6 months, love them. They are heavy and stiff, but really didn't feel any break in period was warranted. I wear them with darn tuff socks #1463. I wish the socks were little thinner. I am now working on trying to tighten the top few laces to help lock up my ankle. I have Danner Pronghonrs and they feel like tennis shoes.
