I went to put on my Rangers and there was a chunk missing in midsole in the heel. That was certainly new.

Called Lowa and was told to send them to Connecticut and from there it goes to Germany. Will be missing the boots probably until Christmas. 4 months. That hurts!!

Has anyone used this service before?

Has anyone used a different service? If so, who?

Any information is appreciated.
Thanks!

I havnt had lowas resoled but had others. Every time i get something resoled it works decent for a while but its not the same as a new or nearly new boot. Even when its returned looking almost good as new. The leather is worn from regular use and now the sole isnt equally worn. Seems like the leather or stitches don't last terribly long afterwards. I end up wishing I would've just got new boots.

Apparently this guy is the guru of boot repair. He's well known in the backpacking community, and is regularly mentioned in Backpacker and Outside magazines. He's even recommended by name on the REI website for footwear repairs.

Thanks to you all for your help.
I sent the boots in to Lowa..
so we will see how that goes. Will post when they get back.
I considered Dave Page, as I have heard of him, and he is pretty well known. Thank you for recommending him.
I have other boots that I have in the stable so to speak to take up the slack.
I hate sending something off and waiting until Christmas
If I didn't have any others I would of definitly called him.
Best to all of you!

I have used Dave Page and he did excellent work. It was on a pair of very lightly used Asolo boots that the original soles had not been properly glued. Although out of their warrantee period, Asolo covered them under warrantee. Years later I had worn out the soles Dave had put on and sent them back to him again. He returned them with a note that the leather was too worn for them to be resoled. If Dave will resole a boot I don't think you would have the problem SW Hunter described.

Lowa does great work and it’s cheap for what they do (rand, mid/outsole, insole and fixing all threads, laces and leather cond).

I had Dave do a pair of Zamberlans and I wasn’t terribly impressed. They had lots of excess glue all over the leather toward the bottom. They are much faster than Lowa, however.

Hey Folks,

Thought on giving an update on my Lowa Ranger resole:

Well, when they say it will take 4 months they were not kidding. I got them a few weeks back.
Had the outsole and the midsole replaced. They replaced the rand on both boots. Great job. No goobs of glue anywhere and very clean. New felt insoles and laces. The laces were very welcome. I was concerned that the width of the boots would change since they are wide, I have duck feet, and they are barely wide enough. Nothing had changed. Fit is still good.

Cost $160 for the resole service, $30 something to ship them from NC to Connecticut. Many would say that for a few more bucks you could get a new boot. I hear you. The upper is in great shape due to Obenaufs LP and Nikwax as well. Plus I run things into the ground before purchasing something new. Some would say I'm cheap.
Hope this information is helpful to some.

Were they still waterproof when you sent them off? Did they replace or change anything that would impact the waterproofness? Maybe I've worn mine two tight, but out of 3 pairs of Lowa Tibet GTX, they've only stayed waterproof for about 10 months. I'm 6 months into my 3rd pair now, but have wondered if they could do anything to fix that on otherwise good boots.

They were waterproof up to a point. Regarding waterproofnessI think of it in 2 categories. Can I stream cross and stay dry and can it stay dry in dewy, wet grass. 2nd category is will it stay dry in a all day rain storm.
When I sent the boots off they were good in the first category, and okay in the 2nd. Fwiw, I have never, ever, had a pair of boots stay dry in an Appalachian, all day rain storm in the summer.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the repairs, should have impacted waterproofness. Operative word should have. They did nothing to the upper. No treatment at all. The upper has always been in good shape with obennaufs and nikwax.

My expectations off waterproof boots are: they all will give out sooner or later.

Hope this helps!
