Louisiana Redfish?

My son inlaw's father lives in east Texas and is recovering from cancer. I would like to take them both on a fishing trip in Louisiana.

What time of year is best for reds? Or is there a best time?

Any recommendation for guides?

Reds can be can be caught year round and the fall (Sept-Nov) is the best time to catch big bull reds on the coast, and it will also be cooler with any cool fronts coming through.


Sorry, no info on guides as i haven't needed them...I've fished the jetties/marshes/bays around Port Fourchon, Grand Isle, and Pointe-aux-Chenes.

Sportsman’s lodge and dogwood lodge are good options in Louisiana. If you want to stay in Texas, check out bay flats lodge.

Big bull reds are impressive fish, getting them with a fly rod is great and sheepshead with a fly rod is a legit challenge as well.

Hot, humid and miserable as you can imagine there May-end of Sept if you are not used to that go outside those months. Spring snd Fall probably best.

Finally something I actually know about!!!

I cant recommend any guides because I dont use them. The best time of year for bull reds is October. For marsh reds, really any time of the year. It shouldnt be much trouble for any reputable guide to put you on them. Depending how far in advance you need to plan this, it may be best to avoid August and September just because of hurricanes, although the fishing is good then.

I can’t help when it comes to the guides for Reds but if you end up down by Rockport check out the boiling pot. They have great food. The only guide I have used down there was for offshore and we went out of Matagorda.

Really anywhere on the coast outside of Atchafalaya Delta. Can catch them inshore in Calcasieu Lake, Houma area, Grand Isle, Venice, St. Bernard. Pick your poison. Generally, the further inshore is better in winter months. Favor the islands in the summer.
