Note: I am currently trying to sync with a podiatrist, but figured can’t hurt getting some other thoughts …

Current “conditions”

  • High arches both feet (highest measurement ever at local FleetFeet on the machine)
  • Supination both feet
  • Insertional tendonopathy on right foot
  • Paroneal tendinitis on left foot
  • Limited big toe mobility on left foot. Bends to roughly 90deg, right to almost 45
  • Degenerative meniscus tears in both knees
  • Local chiropractor/kinesiologist say “scar tissue under arch and metatarsal arch starting to collapse”

  • Chiro said “you need orthotics to help realign your feet to support the high arches and supination”
  • Said “the flex in the Vivo ESC trackers just making things worse”.
  • Prior to my vivos, I ran Solomon quest for these, with either standard insoles, or I have also got some custom cheap feet insoles. Those boots seem to work OK, but I do feel like I get a little bit of bunion pain on my left foot.

Now to the “questions”:

  1. Does anyone else have similar conditions, and what shoe orthotic or combination did you end up with?
  2. Is there anything I could put in those vivos, that would help me? Or if putting or orthotic in it completely defeat the purpose of a barefoot?
  3. If I indeed need orthotics in a more supportive boot, are there other options other than my Solomon Quest, or are the Quest about as good as they get?

Definitely go to a podiatrist ASAP. I don't trust chiropractors personally lol I don't have quite the whole laundry list as you but I overpronate and have poor ankle mobility that I am working on. I wear Lowa boots and Powerstep insoles, which were recommended to me by the podiatrist.

A lot of people are going to come in here saying"just stick with the barefoot it'll make everything stronger and better!!!" but I would definitely listen to the podiatrist.

Which Lowa’s you running? Wide or regular?

I run regular but after these ones get to the end of their usable life, I might switch to wides to better accommodate the inserts. I will also add that I do run the inerts in zero drop altras when I am fly fishing and wet wading.

Also, the Lowa's are going to be quite a bit stiffer than the Solomons. If Solomons fit you well, I'd stick with those plus whatever orthotic the podiatrist recommends.

I really like the Solomons, but they have a narrower toe box. Not sure there is really anything else out there. I'll be interested in seeing what the podiatrist says if/when I can see them.

Danners have a wide toe box as do Altras. Lowa toe box is a little narrower than either of those two. I've had good luck with both Danners and Altras in the past.

Altra makes boots?
I’m off on an Internet search. If they do, I haven’t noticed them yet, and I wear Altras daily. Best shoe I’ve ever tried.
As for boots, I’ll look at Danners, too. I have a pair of Lowa Renegades that are ok. The toe box is much wider than a pair of Asolos, but the Asolos fit my feet much better. Still looking for the Goldilocks boot.
Thanks for the tip!
