Im assembling parts for a new rifle build and looking to have a smith chamber the barrel and assemble the rifle. Who would you recommend? These are some of the names I see with consistent positive feedback.

Alamo precision
Ts customs
Beanland
SPR
LRI
GAP

Who else should I consider?

DE, Montour, campfeld, lane, whaley, wheeler....that should get you going.

When I was on my first assemblage of parts for a build I made a somewhat of a client/customer friendship with an a guy at McMillian. He advised me to go SPR. He's on my third one now.
I'm also impressed with a newer guy, Taylor of Stratton Custom Rifles. The guy has great work ethic and appears to be a real go getter with attention to detail and putting his heart and soul in every rifle that goes out the door.

If you can find a good smith that is local enough to the area you live that you can meet and drop your stuff off in person, that would be my suggestion. If you find a gunsmith/s that is in your area, ask around about them, good and bad word travels fast so you'll know pretty shortly if they're a good smith or a hack.

Over the years I've had builds done by multiple different gunsmiths all across the US but once I found a couple great gunsmiths that are local enough to me that I can meet them and or drop my stuff off in person, I can't ever imagine doing a build with someone I have to ship my stuff to ever again. It's really nice having your smith live close enough you can drive to their shop.

I am putting together my first as well. I have been very happy with sterling precision in MO. Working with Tim has been great! I would also consider Travis from TS Customs in SD. He also has a great reputation in the gunsmith world.

I live in the foothills outside of the central valley in California. There aren’t too many reputable smiths around me. The one good smith that I am aware of is almost a year out just to chamber a barrel.

Not sure if he is back to taking new builds but Shaen Magan @ Shaen Rifles is sort of near you I think?? He posts here on occasion as Shooter71 - super nice guy to work with and really builds a great rifle. He has built 2 for me and both are perfect(y)

That’s close in air miles, but on the other side of the sierras. Might as well be a world away! No one’s getting over the passes any time soon!

He is not accepting any new work currently.

For what it's worth. . I don't have the rifle back yet but LRI has been great to work with. Communication with Shayne has been awesome. They had a question on turning down my brake, I received a phone call. They send you links to a portal with a login to see progress pics on your build when each step is completed.

I'm just having a turn down service done on a brake, notching a feed ramp, inletting for different bottom metal and a cerakote job. Nothing too crazy but they've been great thus far. I bought my Proof prefit barrel from Straight Jacket Armory, they did the chambering. It's been money.

I would do some research before using Straight Jacket Armory. My top choices would be LRI, Jon Beanland, or TS Customs.

Wanted some gun smithing work done a while ago and called probably a dozen or more gunsmiths. I only had 4 pick up the phone or call me back from a voicemail. All 4 have a great pedigree as well.

LRI
Preece precision
Radix precision
TS customs

To me, even if the work is good, if a smith won't pick up or call back it's a no-go. Personally, Ill only be using one of the ones listed above when I need work done because of that.

This information is very helpful. I will add RBros to that list. I sent travis and email with all my questions early this morning and he called me shortly after to discuss my questions. Customer service goes a long way.

Jim Gruning of Gruning Precision is in So Cal and he does great work. Sometimes he is quite busy so he isn't real fast but his work is excellent. He is in Riverside CA.
