Looking to make sure I get this right and so need some advice. I've been working up a set of test cases for a new load for my 6.5x55SE. Ran into the issue of bullet differences, the 140gr Sako Hammerheads I normally run are 3.074" overall length, while the manual specs for the new load (Nosler Accubond 140 gr) are 3.025". Using factory brass that's once fired through the rifle (Sako), full sizing back 0.002", trimmed to 2.155 brass length, each passing a Wilson case gage.
I followed the manual and took them to 3.025 with a tolerance of +-0.0005 (generally on the low side). In testing chambering of an unprimed/unloaded case with my seating depth, I noted that the round was fairly tight and tended to stick in the chamber. So went to the Hornady OAL gage with their reference cartridge and checked it with the accubond pushed forward etc., with the measurement coming back in at 3.0265 after a couple of checks. Checked the cases weren't the issue, and they sit well. Stepping back the reference round, found that it chambers and removes just fine at a shorter OAL, so I'm guessing I've got a chamber that runs a little small, at least when it comes to the Accubond bullet (seems like its a little broader shouldered. So given this - what would be the best course of action to finding the right initial spot for this load - I'm not overly fussed on the exacting seating depth as I'm aiming for a reliable hunting load and thats not something I'm wanting as a variable as this point, as I'm just wanting to work out the powder charge.
