Looking At X-Bolt Pro

I'm looking at selling my 300 WSM Remington XCR II for a X-bolt Pro (in 300 wsm). My Remington 700 shoots good with a limb saver (about a 3/4" group) but I'm looking for something a little more custom. (I can't afford a real custom rifle). Should I be looking at some other options out there? It sounds like a lot of guys like the Tikka T3 but for some reason I'm just not that into them for some reason and I keep going back to the X-bolt. I obviously want a good shooter. I don't see myself shooting 1,000 yards but I'd like the potential to shoot out to 750 or 800. Also, wondering if anyone has has any insight on magazine length with respect to reloading. I hear the Tikka has options for aftermarket magazines allowing for more length. I'm not sure the the X-bolt has other options.

X-bolt short action mags aren't very long, not long enough to seat bullets out any farther in that cartridge. The long action mags will allow up to 3.6". No aftermarket magazine options yet.

I have the xbolt hell’s canyon long range in 7mm and it’s a 1/2” moa gun. I just got the xbolt pro long range in 300wm but have not shot it yet.

I have the X bolt pro in 6.5 Creedmoor and just finished load development for it. Got it shooting 1/2 in at 100 yards. Was able to seat the bullets .020 off the lands and 4 rounds still fit in the mag

You can only get to to about 2.9" in the xbolt WSM mags, i'm not aware of aftermarket options.

My 300 wsm stainless stalker xbolt is a really great package that has seen more field time than any of my customs that cost 3-4x as much. It shoots tight groups but I have never been able to be as accurate with it at longer ranges. For me it's just too light for that much recoil for me to be as consistent with it. It does not have a brake so that might help a bit on the pro although the browning brakes don't look very efficient.

Tikka actions are great for WSM in long action configuration but less than ideal with 11 twist barrels. You could still do well pushing a 180 Elite Hunter or 200.20x bergers fast, they just dont have the BC of the 215s or 208 and 212 ELDs.

Do you think that the standard X-bolt pro with the sporter (but fluted) barrel would be sufficient for shooting out to 750-800? Or would it have to be the Pro Long Range?

I would expect the rifle to be up to the task, in the right hands. The right hands aren’t that common, IMO shooting 6 lb magnums well isn’t easy. Maybe the stiffer stock helps compared to the flexy plastic one I have and I haven’t shot it with a brake so it’s hard to say. I just know a 6 lb 300 mag isn’t what I’d get if I wanted to shoot 800 yards.

The LR model should be easier to shoot accurately.
