longer plates on spotting scopes?

I've seen several photos/videos of guys using spotters with what appear to be longer mounting plates, I'm sure there is a reason, but I don't know why? :D

It's for balancing the scope on your tripod. With a long rail you can move the scope back and forth to get it balanced correctly.

I’ve used them before to have a spotter in one side and a rangefinder or binos on the other.
