Long range plinker

I'm thinking about getting a rifle to plink with that's cheaper to shoot than my 300 wm and 6.5 cm. I shoot out to 500-1200 pretty regularly and have been tossing around the idea of getting a .308 or a .270. Hopefully I can find a cheaper brand of ammo that shoots well out of whatever gun I end up with. I have the stuff to reload, but don't enjoy reloading enough to want to do it more than I have to, but will if I can't find a decent factory load. Not sure on the brand of rifle yet, but I'm curious what rifles, and ammo you guys are using and having good luck with?

I’d say 308 would be more advantageous compared to the .270. Between availability and costs alone, it would make the most sense.

I’d take what your going to spend and buy as much of the same lot factory ammo for that creedmoor you can.

More guns are fun but both calibers you listed are not going to do anything your creedmoor won’t at those ranges. And decent ammo is going to be just as much or more.

If you limit it to 700 or so, a 223 is a great option. Though good factory ammo for that is a bit crazy right now too.

I'd be looking at a bolt action .223... like above, a 308 won't be much cheaper with factory ammo than your 6.5 Creed. 270 will be expensive as well and isn't something I'd really consider much of a "plinker" as well.

I like .243 Winchester for long range targets. I don’t hunt with it but real fun and fairly inexpensive to reload for.

Plinker ammo isn't for shooting long range. It just isn't consistent enough. And, the last time I looked, 308 and 6.5 CM were about the same cost for good ammo. .270 ammo doesn't have high BC bullets, so it isn't going to be any better than 6.5 cm for long range.

You'd be better off just spending the money on ammo for your 6.5 and shoot that barrel out rather than buying a whole new rifle and ammo. Fear the man who owns one gun, he probably knows how to use it. Getting skilled by shooting the same rifle and ammo will be the best thing you can do for long range. Knowing your DOPE and getting the knowledge of how it will shoot burned into your soul is what you really need, IMO.
