I was in southwest CO for first rifle and most of the elk/sign we saw was between 9500-10500 ft. They were either on or headed to Thick timber on North facing slopes.

It was really hot when we were out there, so I don't think the elk were moving a ton and were definitely hard to find. Keep at it and you'll find them!

Thanks guys, love how this site allows us to communicate our common goals. Yeah was out again all day, and another day of nothing. As much as i like the hot weather, its not helping the cause. Have been primarily focusing up high as much as possible, will be at it again tomorrow.

Found a herd of 21 with 3 legal bull, didnt find them until 45 min till dark so just sat on them until dark. Going to get em in the am. Hope i made the right choice, just didnt feel i had enough time to get around a ridge top to play the wind before dark. It was a hard decision to make. They were way high at the tops. Got to watch a couple bulls fight which was awesome and a few cows being very loud, like a late rut action.
