Load Cell for Sleep System/Food?

Hi folks,

My hunting usually is a mix of day hunts with some bivy hunting mixed in. I'm conceiving of a system where I use a day pack sized bag on my frame with everything except my sleep system, rationed out daily food packs and stove, while those items would be set aside in a sort of load cell to get strapped between frame and day bag.

It seems like this modular system could work fairly well in my mixed style of hunting. Has anyone done anything like this? What bags/load cells might you recommend?

Thanks for any insights!

Doing similar with a kifaru straight jacket and a 60l duffel I had.
I have a straight jacket that I plan to sell. I've used it for stuff like this, and it worked well. I've also used other packs with meat shelves and just placed a bag with my "camp" in between the pack and the frame. It's pretty simple.

I had a Stryker xl prior to this. The thing I didn’t care for is it put weight further away from your center of gravity where the straight jacket moved stuff more out towards the sides. Admittedly the batwings aren’t as handy as a regular bag but it’s a worthy trade off for me. Also carries my saddle hunting gear well.

I do every year with Mystery Ranch load cells. I’ve also done it with an HPG Decker pack.

Load cells per use:
Large for my sleep system
Medium for clothes
Small for stove and water filter
Small for chow.

With the decker pack I just stuff the sleep system in and put the cells on top.

I’ve done it with two different mystery ranch bags. For warmer/shorter hunts, I’ve used a Mule this way. That’s my minimalist day hunt bag. And can fit easily fit camp in a dry bag on the shelf. Works great, makes it easy if I’m planning g on dropping camp somewhere, or if I want to lighten up for a stalk. For cooler/longer/wetter hunts I do the same with a sawtooth bag. As I’ve aged, more loads with lighter weight works better packing meat, so I’m not really worried about carrying camp and a full meet load. Dry bag with camp can come put with a meat load easily once I’ve dropped other stuff not needed for packing meat.

My only concern that I have came up with was what to do if your packing a load of meat, and need to take camp at the same time. I'm pretty sure meat against the frame, load cells then bag would work though.

I ended up going way bigger on my new bag so I didn't have to find out the hard way it didn't work. Gonna get a small day pack for it later this year when the day pack is more needed for me.

I agree. I've used it a lot to carry blinds and all my turkey gear. I might just keep it since turkey season is a month out.

The straight jacket just isn't great for colder/wet weather. So for elk hunting, i prefer a traditional style pack. I have a Bedlam and a hellbender that I use now.

The MR load cells are hard to find, unless you want to pay unreasonable amounts of dollars for them on eBay. Thats how I found the decker pack.

I really like to use it with my Crew Cab, that it my favorite way to use it.

MR also has a set of game bags that attach to their frames, I have thought about putting goods in one of those as well.

Hmmmm…….I never thought about using a Decker pack with a crew cab. That small decker probably fits about perfect in the load cell area. Thanks for the idea. -Rufus
