Living in Lander vs Cheyenne WY — Elk Hunting Considerations

I lived in Lander for a bit. If you can get in to the res hunting opportunities, its probably the best hunting in the lower 48. Unfortunately the res blocks a lot of access to the north of town. There are only a couple access points to the Winds there (St Louis and Sinks).

Amazing backpacking and hiking in the winds.

Jobs are usually the biggest drawback to living outside the main hubs in WY.

Its a cool town with more mild weather than the rest of the state. Check out the Lander Bar while you are there.

When my wife and I were looking at retirement options, Lander was a finalist. We spent several weeks there and the wind won. My wife hates the wind so we ended up in SW Colorado.....I still love Lander as it was my choice!
I like SW Colorado a lot as well but it’s hard to swallow Durango sometimes. 🤣 I’ll be in Durango in a week or so for dinner at the Strater hotel then be home in 45 minutes to an hour.

I would also pick Lander.

Another pick for Lander. Cheyenne is closest to the Northern I-25 corridor of Colorado, in my opinion that’s not a very desirable part of the state to hunt.

Lander hands down. Just plan on a trip to Casper every once in a while for bigger stores i.e. Sam’s Club, Home Depot, and Menards. Other than that Riverton is right up the road for everything else.
