Lil help with ideas…

Got home a bit ago from my dad’s 75th. April 10th.

He’s strong as a mule, smart, and still works professionally on and off.

He and I have built, run and maintained boats since I was born. I love hunting and have done so in many lower 48, AK and one Europe over past 25 years. Guess I’m Old , too!!! Grrrr

He’s still wide open!

Would mean the world to me to show him hunting is as fun as boats.

Trying to come up with a 2026 fall hunt while he’s In good shape. Something neat for both of us, adventure, but not too tough.

Money matters, for sure, but willing to spend $20k as upper limit on us both.

Keep going back to NL moose. However , one animal would be fine. Could put dollars towards better critter on 1x2 hunt, but it needs to be fairly easy. He’s good on a cot, and one day getting in and out, but all day every day on feet with terrain wouldn’t work.

Dude lives in bilge of boat, out thinks me (not saying much), and like I said… works like a mule. Just trying to squeeze something in while there’s time. Wife’s daddy is 83 and was just like dad. Her pops now sits in chair and if we are lucky he’ll let the chickens out once a week. Last minute stuff, but I’d like to bring my dad on something before he’s in her dads shape.

$20k definitely UPPER limit. One animal be fine. Would like him to take it. He’s still a crack shot. Has never hunted, but shoots like a weirdo.

Just saw him so alive last night. Want to keep things on the horizon. Speaking of which, he’s still planning on annual 3 month boat trip.

Yeah. Could do that. Taxidermy would add up in a hurry and a lot of travel time, though.

Came home a little last night.

Budget getting smaller today. Hahah. Would be great to something with him, though.

Take the boat to Africa?

He’s got one that’ll do It. 6.5 knots, this climate and logistics be lil too much, though.

I am liking Africa idea though. It’s sure enough plug-and-play. As would be Argentina out NZ. Took a great stag last fall though in Europe.

Buddy of mine has a place in S Africa. Reached out to him earlier. Have done so a lot over years and no “Buddy discount” also in S Africa, and I’d rather go Namibia from what in hear and read. His place is nice, though. Also be fun to bring my 7 year old boy. Not sure what rules are over there, but maybe things could be bent a little bit considering the connection Just be fun have kid participate in some capacity with his granddaddy.

Consider a boat based hunt in AK. A bear hunt or like a black tail deer hunt on Kodiak island. Stay on the boat overnight and have the dingy take you to shore. Never done it myself but there’s lots of videos showing it.

Keeping it simple and flexible as well as relaxed as you want, what about a combo over the counter spring turkey and bear hunt?

Turkeys in the morning with calling, nap mid day, bears toward evening, rinse and repeat.

Might be last minute this year, or could plan for next year to work out logistics. I can't think of a more relaxed, variable hunting experience, where you can work as hard or as little as you want. Calling responses with the turkeys and you'll likely get responses, to spot and stalk for bears, still hunting, or even stand hunting in the right spots. Bonus if it's a state that allows spring baiting. Guides or no guides, your call. No midday nap? Get a fishing license too.

And with your budget, you could do a few years in a row or one year as bougie as you want.

My Dad is also tough as nails but up there in age and a boat guy, also lifelong hunter. I love the idea of a boat based hunt off Kodiak island. Reminds me of reading Fred Bears field notes when I was a kid. I am aiming to draw a tag near him or just do a pig hunt this year.

If you want a lot of action and a lot of fun, you might consider a dove hunt in Argentina - you'll shoot your body-weight in ammo if you want. Big game hunting isn't what I'd do with someone used to going hard and fast, looking for a lot of fun and excitement. If you wanted to stay in the US, maybe a guided quail hunt in Texas, or some feral pig hunting. But the hunts in Argentina are pretty epic from what I understand, with great food and lodge atmospheres as well.
