Lightweight Kimber With A Suppressor, Bad Idea?

I've been wanting a lightweight do all kind of backpacking rifle for awhile now and have settled on something in 280 Ackley Improved as the caliber. I think it will be perfect for elk, deer, antelope and won't produce too much recoil even in a very light weight setup. I also have a suppressor on order with with a taper mount(brake) design that I would like to use on this gun that weighs under 12 ounces. I've found a good deal on a Kimber Hunter in 280 ackley that I think would be perfect. My plan would be to remove the gel crap out of the stock (great thread here on Rokslide about that by the way) and maybe even cutting the barrel down a couple inches for my brake/suppressor. Anyone have a Kimber with a suppressor? Is this a bad idea? Any reason I shouldn't do this? My suppressor has the option of a 1/2x28 thread pitch mount that I would think would work with the Kimber barrel (instead of the standard 5/8 24)? Any thoughts, opinions appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't know why not. Just make sure you stay above the min barrel length for the suppressor. 1/2-28 is a little skinny for a suppressor, but should work OK on a more mild cartridge.

Understand that this will be a barrel heavy setup. It will take some getting used to for offhand shooting.

Suppressor is rated all the way up to 300 ultra mag. And I don't plan on cutting off more than 2-4 inches from the stock 24 inch barrel. Just so the gun isn't too long overall more than anything.

I cut a 300 Wsm tikka barrel down to 22” and put a suppressor on there. Had more pronounced POI shift than my heavier profile barrels but as long as it’s repeatable then you should be good to go.

What suppressor do you have coming?

I have Kimber MA in 280 Ackley...I'm going to order the Kimber adapter for suppressors (7/16" threads to 5/8" threads).

I've also considered cutting down my barrel from 24" to 22", but don't think I'll go shorter than that. At 22", the barrel diameter is approx .565". That is really not enough barrel for 1/2" threads with shoulder for suppressor, so I would still opt for the adapter.

That's a good idea. Looks like they're out of stock currently though

shortening the 280ai barrel may waste a fair amount of fps. have you thought about 308, 7mm-08 or 6.5cm? they all seem to do well with shorter barrels and don't lose too much. the recoil should be reduced compared to the ackley as well.

also, i found my kimber takes a little more concentration to shoot well than the tikka. not an issue when shooting short distances but more of a problem out past 400 yards. some of that may be that the kimber stock is tiny compared to the tikka. weight is likely the other factor.

I've done this with my Montana in 7mm-08, barrel cut at 20" and threaded M13x1.0, I live outside the US thus the metric threads.

I bought the rifle used and the previous owner had it threaded 1/2-20 and that suppressor would sometimes work itself loose, I've never encountered this with the new one. 1/2-28 should work well for you.
