Looking at building a short rifle for deer and likewise game shooting 120-140grain bullet. Trying to determine whether to go with the 7mm-08 Remington, 7WSM or 7RSAUM with either a Bartlein 2b or a new Bartlein carbon wrapped barrel finished at 20inches. Most likely will put a muzzle brake on it with how light it will be. Will a Defiance XM length action be better than one of their other two shorter actions? Then putting it in a Manners EH6 or EH1. Thoughts or experiences with something similar would be much appreciated.

If you’re planning on using it in a tree stand and shots are less than 300 yards, a 20” 7mm08 on a Defiance medium action (same length as Rem 700 short action) would be perfect. A Manners EH-6, SL, EH-4, or EH-3 would be my choice for stock, the EH-1 is definitely not made for treestands.

If you’re going to go longer than 300, then stepping up to the SAUM or WSM would give added range. You could use a DBM magazine to get 2.95” COAL in the Defiance medium action. If you needed to go longer COAL than that, the XM length action would provide that.

I’m always baffled at fellas who can spec a “build” but have no f’n clue what headstamp to ream the chamber.

Go buy a RAR and lop the barrel to 18”. Chambering won’t matter because it’ll do anything your gonna do anyway.

Done.

I'm a 'bolt' guy but will say that the best 'treestand' rifle I've owned was a Rem pump 243 cut off and recrowned.(think model was 760?)Pretty accurate all considered.Easily a 200 yd plus gun for deer.
I know,I know,that's crazy but....just sayin.

Kimber7man I agree.Ditto over some swamps in 'big woods' although often high grass prohibits very long shots there. My lil 243 was strictly 'big woods' stuff where 200 would be the longest and often 100 was 'long'.

When I think of tree stand for deer, “shorter range” pops up in my mind too. If under 200 typical a 100 Winchester 94 is about perfect. 5 lbs low recoil. Although I agree with above, the pump is superior for a second shot if needed.

If it’s us a solid readied rifle platform and seeking a bean field rig for 300 and beyond sounds like a good plan.

7/08

I like manners eht or a mcmillan hunter style stock for tree stand hunting.

To be honest my Browning BAR excelled in the stand. Semi auto, accurate, extremely low recoiling, short barrel that is convenient in a stand. I sit towards the tree so it’s hard to swing a massive barrel to the other side of a shot presents on your dominant side.

I have shot 2 buck over 200 yards from a tree stand with a 7mm-08 with no problems at all.

Love my Kimber Montana in 7mm08. Lightweight, extremely accurate along with negligible recoil. A lot of whitetails and coyotes would agree that this has been a deadly set-up.

7-08 is perfect for what you want. You can go light and not worry about recoil. I am surprised no one has said this yet so.... get a tikka.

I have a Tikka T3X in 7mm-08 and use it for exactly what you describe. I can’t think of a more perfect rifle for that.

Can you hunt with a tree stand rifle out west one day or in the mountains? Baffling.

I’ve been thinking the same in having a short suppressed mn deerstand rifle. So far I’veaccumulated a 7mm blank, a trigger, adjustable manners, timney calvin, etc. just needing the defiance action and it’s game on.

It’d be so great to be able to move easily in a box blind without having to blow your ears out.
