I've been doing quite a bit of shooting with my son (8yo) and his Tikka .223 compact. He shoots it really well but I can't help noticing that the way he has to get positioned behind the rifle seems very awkward and unnatural. I haven't dove in to the exact adjustments needed but knew that I wanted to do something different for him. I saw MDT had a pretty good sale over the holiday and I picked him up a LSS Gen 2 chassis for it. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of chassis systems but undoubtedly, they offer a much more customizable fit than a traditional stock.

I only ordered the body portion of the chassis from them as their buttstocks are all 1.5lbs+ and seemed to be catered towards more PRS style applications. I'm looking for a buttstock/cheek riser option that would function similar to their skeleton carbine stock. I'm specifically looking for something that clamps or bolts through the buffer tube so I can cut it down to length to work with him as he grows. That's the entire point of this setup.

I've found this but I'm not sure how well it will work for a bolt gun. The recoil pad is non-existent. Obviously XLR has some good options but spending $400 on a buttstock just seems a bit silly.

The last resort is to get a normal milspec buttstock that I can mod with a good recoil pad and a cheek riser. It seems like most of the magpul buttstocks have those aftermarket options but I'd really like to avoid that and get a more solid and stable option for him. This is all sort of new territory for me so I'm posting to see if anyone has any good ideas because I'm sure I'm not the only one that's been in this spot.

Thanks!

The XLR TR-2 buttstock is pretty hard to beat for a youth build, specifically the shorter option they offer w/ the 10 - 13.5" LOP adjustment. It's ~22oz, so definetly more than than the buttstock you linked above, but will be 10x more forging and shootable with an actual toe line. I've played with some of those ultra minimalist buttstocks and I've yet to find one that wasn't a pain in the butt to shoot well...

I have a Tikka 223 Roughtech Ranch in an XLR Element 4.0 Mag w/ a TR-2 Buttstock. It's still a sub 8.5lb build with scope and suppressor, serves me great as a trainer rifle, and serves each of my 4 kids great with a simple LOP adjustment. The longer toe line makes it quite easy for my kids to shot!
