What are the best options for packable tent with a floor? I say 2p but I want 1p with room for gear. Say sub 3lbs all up.

Or educate me on floor less tarp shelters and weather. I am not scared of the buggy man but like a dry ass

Where will you be hunting? I've used a kifaru super tarp coupled with a tigoat ptarmigan bivy and enlightened equipment rev x quilt for over 50 nights the past 3 years. Absolutely love it. My whole sleep system, tarp, sleeping pad, bag, everything is sub 3.5 lbs.

Tent wise, again my recommendation changes on where you hunt. I will be using a Kuiu Stormstar on Kodiak and the Brooks Range this fall. It weighs like 5 lbs tho. I would never pack it into Colorado or Montana tho.

Floorless is the way to go unless you are hunting a really really wet area like the tundra that holds water.

I use floorless and I hunt at or above 8k in October. Make sure you get a tent that can withstand heavy snow loads. We usually get dumbed on towards the end of October and it's a heavy wet snow.

I have both a Kifaru Supertarp for floorless...and a Big Agnes copperspur ul2. . If you dont want to go floorless I am extremely pleased with my copper spur. I got the mntnglow version, which weighs basically nothing more and with a click of a button my entire tent lights up perfectly for finding things in the dark, and with the rain fly on it is very low light emitted in terms of disturbing game or anything. It also has an outer vestibule off both sides, between inside and those two areas, i have no problems with all my gear being out of the elements with plenty of room for me to move around as well

Could you break down the components to show how you're getting sub 3.5#? I'm in the same boat looking for a super ultralight system and I haven't found a way to have all this stuff for sub 3.5# with tarp, bivy, pad, and bag. Thanks.

Probably one of the best deals I have found is the Alpkit Ordos 2. It comes in at 2.86 pounds. Basically it's a rebranded golite imogene 2. You can either use it as a tradituonal tent or go minimalist with a footprint poles and the fly. When golite went under Alpkit bought their Imogene tents to sell then they contracted with the factory to continue having them made in different colors.

Alpkit is a British company so you will have to change the currency to USD and start the checkout process to see the actual price because the the price includes the VAT tax which goes away once you add your shipping address. The Ordos 2 with footprint is $244 shipped vs $350 for the new mytrail tent UL 2 with footprint .

I've been real happy with the MSR Hubba Hubba NX. They storage bag for the tent is top notch. Excellent design as the tent fits back in super easy, even the footprint folds back into itself super easy.

Any experience with the tarptents? I like the MoTrail concept.

How fragile are they?

I recently bought a Stratospire 2 Tarptent and like I like it so far. It hasn't be in that harsh of weather besises some pretty heavy rain, including a sprinkler well watering the lawn, and it stayed dry inside. Seems very well built, I asked some questions on the website and Henery the owner got back to me VERY fast. One of the selling points was being able to set it up here in WI with the bug netting, but having the ability to set up without it as a tarp if I want to out west. Without the netting its 61sq ft where as a supertarp is 52 sq ft and a mega tarp is 67 sq ft, so pretty much right between them. So far I'm very happy!

Come next spring I'm gonna be needing a new tent and if nothing changes it with be between a BA Copper Spur UL 2 or the new REI Quarter Dome 2. Likely be a coin toss or matter of price. .02

I own a TarpTent Scarpa 1person. It's a great tent that is really well thought out. I've been happy with it and its durability. I've never been caught in super rough weather yet, but I would without a doubt take it over a box store brand.

Another vote for a Tarptent Stratospire 2. You can use it with or without the floor. Good luck.

God Bless.

That was a rough guesstimate on the original quote. I just looked further into it and got the following. 19 ounces for the 30* quilt, 6.5 ounces for the bivy, 16 ounces for the xlite pad (20 for xtherm), 18 ounces for the tarp. I guess I'm actually in the 3.75-4 lbs range depending on my pad.

Edit: I totally blanked on stakes. I've done it before just using trees and rocks to tie off, but usually am packing stakes along pushing me towards 5 lbs for the whole kit and caboodle. Still not bad considering most are in that 7-10 lb range for tent and entire sleep system. I love it, but it took quite a while to get used to it vs traditional pup tents.

I use the SS2 as well. Really like it. I'm a big guy and like my space but can squeeze two others and their gear into the SS2 if necessary. The vestibules are quite spacious. It's also the tallest model. I use a proper R rated inflatable mat and EE quilts as well.

Mountain hardware Ghost UL 2(really a 1.5)& 3(really a 2.5). Only negatives I found on the three is the door height and inside height, but I got stuck in a nasty storm gusts and 2" of rain in one night and I was dry.

With that said I'm going to order the tut, and keep the ghost for skeeter seasons. A camp chair and stove really appeal to my back when your stuck in a tent all day.

I run a Hubba Hubba NX too and like it. Previous tent was a stoic 2 person which I still have and like but don't use for spike camping. Another good one is the Big Agnes, tents a lot of people like those too.

Check out Luke Moffats review of the Brooks Range Foray 2p Tent, which I also have. I prefer having a floor when I am way out in the backcountry. It gives peace of mind that your gear is going to stay dry, especially when I'm solo. Used it one night in Seward this summer in torrential rain and it didnt even condensate inside. I have guy lines attached and a enough stakes for every guy out and still only comes to 2.9 lbs, Neo Air Xlite pad and Underground Quilts Flight Jacket 20* Quilt with extra down in the body and foot box. Total Weight comes to 5.3 lbs for a 3+ season sleep system that could work down to 0*F if needed.
