After using Under Armour the last 5 years I have decided to upgrade to merino. I hunt Sept archery in whatever state I get a tag. Do most of you go with the light for your base layer.? I sweat easily with activity but tend to get cold at night( need to upgrade my sleeping bag).

I say go with the light weight stuff for your base layer. Then add the medium to heavier stuff as needed. Do you have a good puff jacket?

Not to hijack the thread.......when do you guys use a layer for the lower body? I'm wondering if I should purchase the bottoms or not.

I love to use the Llano top and then bring a Chama hoody or Chama 3/4 Zip to put on over the top if I get chilly. While hiking in temps from 80-90 degrees down to 20-30, I have found the Llano to be suffcient at keeping me comfortable.

BrianB, I use the Red Desert boxers and then if I am expecting cooler temps I will wear the Alleghany bottoms, they are very comfortable and do not itch at all next to the skin.

Thanks Nick for the info. I have the Red Desert's as well, but I never here much about guys using the bottoms and at what temps.

For a few hunts this past year I wore just the Alleghany bottoms and my rain pants. Any time the weather is at 35 or below, I will be wearing them as well. If I know I will be sitting stationary for hours in a stand with temps at 50 or below, I would likely wear them too.

I start out with a lightweight layer for my next to skin layer. I have a lightweight and a medium weight so I can go LW, or MW, or LW+MW depending on what the weather is doing.

I go lightweight for no other reason than I CAN'T STAND the feeling of wet, sweaty fleece on me. So a light or even superlight baselayer...I can handle that next to skin and a spare (dry) shirt is super light to carry and change into when I'm done sweating like a hog.

I have found that the lightweight merino shirts dry very quickly in even a slight breeze. So after a good hike or climb, I just take my pack off and over shirt if I'm wearing one, and in 5-10 minutes it's good to go.
