Lift x & rx9

I’ve been shooting a Hoyt rx3 since its conception and have enjoyed killing animals with it. I’ve shot every bow from Hoyt and Mathews since and up until this year I haven’t been impressed. I may end up buying a new bow but wanted some real world info that I can’t seem to find online.

I’ve shot both the rx9 and the lift x. I’ve shot them set up at 70 and 75 pounds. The lift smokes the Hoyt in a speed test when shooting my 467 grain arrow. I even shot the lift x at 80 and was going 305 with a 29” draw and a short d loop. The 28.5 DL seemed a touch short. Which is weird bc my rx3 is 28”

I’m a big fan of the Hoyt draw cycle compared to the Mathews but I’m digging the longer riser on the lift x. I’m also a fan of the cam system on the lift c as well.

I can’t seem to find a Hoyt ultra with more than 70 pound limbs or a rx9 with 80 pound limbs.

Are any of you shooting a rx9 or ultra (or the aluminum version) with 75 pound or 80 pound limbs? If so, what kind of speed are you getting? I’m a 28.5 -28.75 inch draw in the new Hoyt’s.

Just trying to get a reasonable and fair comparison if I’m going to upgrade what I got. It’s not worth it to me to buy a new bow that is the same speed as my rx3 even if the new ones are more shooter friendly. And the only reason I’m wanting more speed is to push a heavier arrow at 285ish feet per second. Not that I even really need it since I blow through everything as is.

not exactly what you’re looking for, but I just chrono’d my ax2 29 (70 pounds, 28” dl) with a 458 grain arrow at 282-283 fps. Figure 10-20 fps faster with more dw.

I also have a lift x 33 that I’m starting to regret. It’s a fantastic bow but after a few months I just don’t seem to get along with it compared to the Hoyt. I’ve had both brands in the past, probably lean more towards Hoyt though. The riser length/minimal reflex drew me to the lift, but it seems very unforgiving for what it is. I struggle with left/right misses and have tried a few different grip options. The Hoyt just fits me better it seems.

I mention that since you’re coming from an rx3, so you may feel more at home with Hoyt. The lift felt great at the shop but it holds/aims better than it shoots (for me) if that makes sense.

This arrow speed calculator from https://www.thearrowbuilder.com/speedcalc has been the best I’ve found. I think it’s @Bump79’s site so maybe he can chime in.

I have had the RX9 and RX9 Ultra this year thus far, here are some speeds:

Hoyt RX9- 30'' DL #75- (75.8 LBS) 513 Grain Arrow at 290 FPS
Hoyt RX 9 Ultra- 30'' DL at 70# (69.6 LBS)- 513 Grain Arrow at 279 FPS

Here is info of a buddies RX9 Ultra with 75# Limbs:
Hoyt RX 9 Ultra- 29.5'' DL at 74.5#s- 506 Gr Arrow at 281 FPS

Hope this helps...

I have no specs and limited experience with either bow, but for what it is worth I gave a slight advantage to the Mathews, and that is not common for me, I typically have some kind of issue with a Mathews over the years!

Not a quality issue or anything like that but just typically do not jive with them.

If you're not also planning to get all new accessories, I wouldn't even mess with it.

There's way bigger performance jumps in the new rests and sights and really slick quivers than the actual bows. Especially with Hoyt being late to jump on the tune-it-yourself bandwagon and Mathews cams falling out of time like crazy.

Rx9 Ultra 80# @ 28” & 447 grain arrow:
Stock strings: 293
GAS SystemX: 298

(also should be noted that’s with a lot of weight on the string. Hamskea raptor peep w/ interchangeable aperture, nose button & peep tuner)

Hmmmm… intriguing numbers. I think I’d be able to get a 500 grain arrow around 285 with that setup given I’m 1/2” - 3/4” longer DL.

With that being said, that’s a great setup you currently have.

I probably would get me accessories. I’m running an option archery canyon pounder on my rx3. It’s ok. Not a fan of macro adjustment on pins though. That kinda sucks about it. Same ole bee stinger stab but a newer epsilon rest. I won’t buy another tight spot quiver. I’ve gone through 3 over the last couple years and the last one I bought new I had to super glue areas to get the rattle out of it.

I haven’t heard anything about the Mathews cams. I may have to read up on that.

As far as new sights there are for sure some good options. I like the new driver by Accel. That being said I’m not sure how durable they are and I had an issue with one on my Mathews no cam htx. Not a big fan of the dialed scope. It’s a lot of money for angled dialing and I don’t really need two sight tapes on a bow. Honestly, I would probably go back to a spot hog. I ran the fast eddy xl single post with dual indicators for several years and that thing took an absolute beating. That included rolling down shell rock landing on it 3 times causing the sight housing to get shoved down until it was bottomed out with it locked. I broke 2 arrows and knocked the quick disconnect loose from the riser which led to a 3.5 mile hike back to the truck for an Allen wrench big enough to tighten it down. Set the sight back to 20 inch n my tape and it was dead on.

I’d buy a new rx9 but I really didn’t want a shorter ata bow bc of string angle. I may take a harder look at the ultra. I’ve kind of been wanting one for a while but they have always been so damn slow that even at 80 pounds they were barely the same speed as my rx3. It’s at 28” with 446 grains shooting 282. So spending 2k on a new bow just seems excessive for a replica of what I have (so to speak).

Hell, I may keep what I have and buy some reloading stuff so I can stuff my own ammo without begging or bartering to use a press and powder dispenser from someone. I don’t even have any bow hunts set up this year. lol
