Because they hold zero and are reliable. There are some exceptions like the NF NXS and SHV that are lightish weight and are still tough. (I know this thread is a year old, nothing like resurrecting it lol)Everyone spends thousands of dollars to drop oz then they top off there rifle with a 2lb boat anchor.
Hunting scopes shouldn't be heavy....change my mind. If your a long range guy then pack your 10lb rifle all you want but 90% of hunters can't make a consistent shot over 300yrds. The internet makes everyone think they need a 1000yrd hunting rifle.Because they hold zero and are reliable. I don’t disagree with you, but 300 yards isn’t very far for some people. My son has been killing antelope bears and deer at over 400 yards since he was 10. We practice out to 1250 regularly, long range is all relative I suppose. But I am willing to use something like the NXS 2.5-10x42 that weighs 20oz and sacrifice 5x on the top end for something that will hold zero. I have owned 4 VX5HDs and 3 VX6HDs. I think the glass is phenomenal. The zero shift when traveling killed me only happened on one VX5HD and one VX6HD, but it was annoying enough that I sold them all. But if I want to put a 2lb scope on a 5.5lb rifle, I am still only at 7.5 lbs. i just picked up the ridgeline fft in 280 AI for a mountain rifle and am going with the little nxs. My 10.5lb 6.5 PRC that is set up for long range has the 4-32 NX8 - its a perfect fit for that rifle.Hunting scopes shouldn't be heavy....change my mind.
