Am likely going to be purchasing a Leupold VX-5HD 3-15x44 Firedot this week, but wanted to hear some input on any others I should consider. I have been shooting Leupolds for years, but this will be the highest quality one I've owned (shooting a VX3i now).

Anything else in a similar price point (+/- $1000) that I should consider?

Vortex LHT is pretty competitive with the VX5. I'd look at that one for sure.

Edit to add: Zeiss V4 4-16 is also a pretty well regarded direct competitor. Have not shot the V4, but reputation is quite good.

Very pleased with the exact scope you are looking at. Probably going with a VX-6 on my next build just for a few of the extra features for long range stuff. It’s the same glass though.

red Hawk rifles does have demo Zeiss scopes of comparable specs in the same price range if you want to consider something else. Some of the Maven scopes are in that price range as well. Can’t honestly say I have put real time behind either though, I’ve always had such good luck with my older VX3s (I don’t dial these) and my current VX5. Never been super impressed with the Vortex scopes I’ve lookEd through , though honestly never looked through their highest end stuff

I hope you got thick skin.
Thick skin? It's not personal for me so not sure why I would need it... just looking to make a good purchase. It'll be the most expensive scope I've ever bought.

Primarily looking for good low light clarity.

The internet loves to trash Leupolds.

My experience is that they work fine if you set them and forget them. If you intend to dial, look elsewhere!

I doubt I'll dial that much, if at all. The specific one I'm looking at is CDS but only because it's Firedot, with the right magnification for the right price.

For about the same money I’d have to agree with the Vortex LHT recommendation. Glass quality is comparable, and it will dial reliably. I would also take a good look at these Zeiss V4 too.

Is it the internet or is it just Rokslide?

My experience is similar to yours. I've had Leupolds for years with no problem. I currently have two VX3s and a VX5. I dial the heck out of them and have had no issues with tracking or returning to zero. If I was looking for another scope, I'd be buying Leupold.

I have 3 vx6 HD , love them all

Not just rockslide. 24 hour campfire is even worse with the bashing.

Another happy Vortex LHT user here. I compared the VX5 directly with it and they were very similar optically. What tilted the decision for me were the adjustment handling and dependable tracking. Not that I dial a lot, but a scope that can dial dependably should hold its zero better too, or so I have read.

Liberty Optics is the place to buy at a very good price, but they are on back order. I just bought a second one from them :)

I had the lht and the vx5hd and stuck with the vx5hd. I do like vortex as well and have had plenty of their scopes but I liked the leupold this go around.

I was looking at the VXHD5 until I hit this, Meopta was also on my list as I have one that I like as well as with V4 but I didn't know how solid it was until reading Forms review. On top of him being a shooter, he truly tests equipment to the breaking point and understands more about optics then I ever will or want to. Well written review too... Read all the way through to get his opinions/experience with many of the scopes discussed https://www.rokslide.com/forums/threads/meopta-optika6-3-18x50mm-ffp-evaluation.145959/

I’m impressed with that same leupould on my brothers rifle. It tracks just fine. Very clear. Was actually able to tune groups @ 200 with it just recently which for me is hard to do with 15x. Will be sending info in for the free turret

When I looked through the glass VXHD5 and most of the Leupold scopes were impressive. I had honestly had never given all that much thought to my "scope might fail" until reading Forms posts. He brings up a really good point, we focus too much on glass and not enough on durability/repeatability aspect of scopes, as that's what matters most. I tend to baby my equipment but knowing on a hunt, especially deep in the back country when you don't have a spare rifle around, anything can happen. When it does is your scope a snowflake or up for the challenge? I don't know that Leupold won't hold up but clearly he has put some of these brands to test and some are better than others. I don't want to be want to be on that hunt that i've built up tons of P points and spent a good more than my wife would be ok with, only to have a failure. The warranty doesn't do me any good when I miss that shot

I've been looking at the VX5HD for my next rifle, and I'm in a toss-up between a Meopta Meopro 4.5-14x44 and the VX5. If you're Military or LE, Meopta has a very good program. I've been super impressed with my binoculars from them. Personally I won't bother with Vortex anymore, three strikes for me, too many other good options.

Another option I'd like to look into is Maven. I'm putting the build off until next summer, so I have some time. Looking forward to your thoughts on whatever you end up with.

Whats the LE/Military discount, I can't find any info on it. Never mind I just found the info on Long Island Firearms

Leupold has a very generous Military/LEO program as well.
