My vx5 works great
I'm sure you've posted this elsewhere, but I'd like your opinion on scopes/rings. I'm the kind that would like to buy once, cry once and never worry about if I should have spent a little more.I have no issue evaling one, and it does need to be, if someone wants to send Ryan one I will do so.
And that is what they do constantly.
Are SWFA and Nightforce the scopes you recommend? I'm leaning NF NXS 2.5-10x42, but wondered if there's other options.
What rings do you recommend? I've mostly used Talley rings in the past because they are light and local, but I also like the Zeiss Precision Rings with the bubble level.
On a lightweight/mountain rifle. I've got a CA Ridgeline in 300PRC and Weatherby Backcountry Ti in 6.5WBY RPM. Or it could end up on my next 6.5, but I'm not sure what I'm getting yet (maybe a Cross or a Tikka). What rifle?
Swfa and NF scopes are reliable. The NXS is SFP which is not ideal. The SWFA 3-9x is a better general purpose scope.

Weight, reliability, and exposed elevation turret with zero-stop are what I'm prioritizing. I've currently got Leupolds on all of my rifles.
I'm very comfortable out to 400m with my current setups. Haven't had the opportunity to shoot much beyond that due to home range limitations, but I did just join a club with a 1000yd and 1-mile range.Hawkin Hybrids for 700’s, Sportsmatch for Tikkas.
What realistic ranges are you actually going to kill animals at? Not think you may, but what do you actually shoot animals at?

I've killed an aoudad at close to 700m resting on a Jeep hood, but it was absolutely dead wind with a 28 Nosler.
I'd say 600m would be the goal, depending on wind situations. I'm not likely to shoot at an animal if I have to dial/hold for significant wind.

Have backorder a 3-9 and a fixed 63-9x42mm SWFA is the huckleberry.
+2 for an eval on this scope. I’m on alert for this exact scope when it when it comes back in stock for a backup/ more budget oriented rifle.I have no issue evaling one, and it does need to be, if someone wants to send Ryan one I will do so.

Any idea if you will be able to get your hands on one? I’m stoked you found the thread and will probably buy/pass depending on your review.+1 for evaling
I would love to hear about your personal tests with one.
I'm only five years late but no one seems to have answered Jeremy's question, so here goes ...What's wrong with leaf springs? Nightforce uses leaf springs made of titanium in all NXS scopes (not sure on the other lines, but I imagine they all have leaf springs). Other high end makes also do. Leupold does. Are coil springs inherently better? Why? hint: they aren't and present issues in scope design like limiting erector travel due to coil bind.
It's attention to detail and base design. Leupold has some reliable offerings, and some not as great ones. For a long while, no one called them out on it. Times have changed, but they are sluggish to improve.
The problem isn't that they don't know how to make a reliable optic. They choose not to for whatever reason.
