I have Vx5hd in 1-5x24 and 2-10x42 and vx3hd in 2.5-8x36. The one thing that irritates me about the vx3hd is the narrow and thin duplex crosshairs and small field of view. In low light or for fast acquisition the wider/thicker cross hairs in the vx5s are much nicer. Also, of course, you get a wider field of view but pay a weight penalty. I can’t speak to the quality of the glass as they both seem perfect to my eye.
I only have the vx3hds on my sons’ rifles where weight is more important. The 1-5x24 is perfect for my .30-06 elk/deer rifle and the 2-10x42 is on my AR which is set up for long range varmints.
If the vx3hd had come out first I would have only bought that and been happy not knowing what I was missing out on with the Vx5hd. Now that I’ve had a vx5 for several years it’s hard to down grade.
