Hi all, I just picked up my first hunting rifle, a Tikka T3x Lite Roughtech in .308. I'll mainly be hunting whitetail and aoudad. I also hope to go on elk and other western big game hunts in the future. I'm looking to get a Leupold VX-5HD 3-14x44mm CDS-ZL2 FireDot Duplex scope. I see it listed on Eurooptic for $899. Has anyone seen a lower price for this scope anywhere and is it worth waiting to see if the price drops more in the next few months? Also, if anyone is selling theirs, let me know. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Anything you else you would recommend in a similar price range?
Trijicon Credo, Nightforce SHV, Maven RS1.2.

I believe Palmetto state armory has Trijicons on clearance right now. Can't remember if they were FFP or SFP. But they were a good price.

That's a good price for a good scope from a good manufacturer.
Don't listen to the haters.

Thanks, I'll look into these. I'm kinda of leaning towards SFP

Good scopes dont lose zero during regular use.

Is this something you personally have experience with?
I do actually have this scope, never had a negative issue over many years of hunting and target use, and I do use the elevation turret often for various distances. It always returns to zero.

It's interesting you point out "regular use", for me that means taking care of my equipment, not dropping it over and over, to see if a problem can be created.

Be aware, this forum has a habit of people piling on a product, either favorably or unfavorably, that doesn't always align with the majority opinion outside of here. If Leopold is the POS that so many here like to pretend it is, how did they ever get to be so successful?

I have personal experience with a Mark 5, and I have to re zero it constantly. It's in a properly mounted 1 piece Spuhr mount on a PRS rifle. That rifle lives its life on a bench on an open bi pod. It goes from that bench I to my truck and to the range. If that isn't normal use, I am not sure what is. The Mark 5 tracks and RTZ just fine. But zero wanders on it.

I know of 1 VX 5 personally that has failed and have 1 friend who has one with no issues yet. Do you think he is lying in the Evaluation I posted in this thread? Everyone on this forum who has had a leupold fail is lying for some reason?

You asked if Leupold is such a POS then why are they so successful? Ask that to the millions of Americans who go to the range the week before deer season to "re zero" their rifles. Why do they need to be re zeroed every year before hunting season? Your average guy doesn't care or even think about the fact that they have to adjust their scopes all the time.

Every single VX 5 that leaves the factory might not fail. You might get one that services your needs just fine. That doesnt mean that they dont fail more often than some other brands and models that are properly built and have a much smaller failure rate. I had a $200 Vortex Diamondback that stayed zeroed for 4 years of hard abuse. Yet I know guys with Razors and Vipers that had to move on to different scopes because of issues.

There are other options that are much more durable than Leupold.

I could point to a million different “successful” products that aren’t any good. That’s why half the degrees coming out of universities are marketing.

I also have the Mark 5, no issues with that one either. The reason I bought it, I was so impressed with the VX5, I just had to see what I was missing. Can't say I feel it is worth the extra cost, which makes the VX5 worth all that much more IMO.

While no product is perfect every time, everywhere, my VX5 has held up through some tough conditions. While hunting, life happens, it's been dropped twice. Once on going up loose ground on a steep mountain with my eye on the horizon, the other time, I stepped on ice and my feet went out like a cartoon. Both times, a verification shot was spot on.

It's no wonder this scope has a 5 star review in most places, but why here the popular opinion suggests such a contrast, is a mystery to me.

Look man. Every one is entitled to their opinion based off their lived experience. The OP started a thread looking for opinions. I gave him mine, with data to support my opinion. You gave your opinion which is contrary to mine. Thats fine, it's a free country, and I am not trying to change your mind.

I have $350 SWFAs on all my hunting rifles. Guys outside of Rokslide would laugh at me for using a $350 scope while running a $1500 Vortex that has no structural integrity.

I bet the majority of animals in the country are killed with the Weavers and Vortex scopes that came on a Savage Axis.

There are plenty of guys running Leupys and love them. IMO there are better options out there for the price point. Thats nothing more than my opinion based on the information I have absorbed over time. No one has to have the same opinion and can come to their own conclusions.

But one thing ive come to learn being on rokslide for many years now, is I can typically take the opinions of the masses on this forum and it will help me make the right decisions regarding gear.
