Leupold VX-3i 3.5-10?

Looking at putting this scope on my X Bolt Hells Canyon Speed in 300 WSM. Is the 10X adequate for 500 yard shots? I’ve read some reviews on the CDS not tracking well for some. Any thoughts here?

I’ve been using the vx3i 3.5-10x40 on my tikka 30-06. It’s been a good scope. I haven’t used the CDS dial much so can’t speak to that. I’ve killed deer out to 350 yards and practiced out to 400. No complaints so far. Seems to be a good reliable lightweight scope and exactly what I was looking for.

Me and a buddy bought 6.5 creedmoors this year. Both did v3xi. He did 3.5-10. UI went 4.5-14. It was about the same weight and on sale. I have shot side by side with my buddies 3.5-10 on a similar rifle and can’t say it helps much at 300 and under. 500 might be a different story. We are both pretty happy but only a season into our guns.

I’ve got one on a 6.5 Grendel Howa Mini Action. Great glass, no issues with any of my CDS scopes tracking.

500 yard shot on what?

A rabbit? a moose?

You can shoot 500 yards with 10x on most big game animals I would say, a good reticle makes a big difference.

We have a couple of the 4-14 models, track well enough for us, great scopes.

Depends how likely you are to take a shot like that, if 99% of the game you shoot is 350 and under and its "big' game the 10X will be a great scope.

If you shooting smaller animals and often take a long shot the 4-14 would probably be a bit better

I have a VX3I 3.5-10x40 and a VX3I 4.5-14x40. I prefer the 4.5-14 over the 3.5-10 for any range.

I use a 4.5-14X for prairie dogs out past 800 yards. 3.5-10X out past 500 for prairie dogs. Coyotes past 300 with the 2.5-8X. No problems with big game to 500 with 10X in my opinion. The field of view gets small at 14X and repeat shots might be slow with the 14X as well.

For target shooting, make sure you get the proper sized aiming point. You can shoot good groups with a low powered scope with the right aiming point, one you can quarter....but not one that is buried behind the cross hair or dot. Good luck!
