I’m considering purchasing a Leupold VX-3 HD in the 4.5-14 x 40 configuration. Primary use will be for hunting Midwest and west. Anybody have this scope and what are your thoughts on it?

I have 3 vx3 hd scopes, two 4.5-14x40 and a 3.5-10×40. I have been very happy with all three, no problems holding zero and have tracked well for me with shots out to 600 yds. Great scope for the money IMO, very lightweight also.

Thanks! Did you end up getting their custom dials for those?

I don’t have the scope you’re looking at. All of mine are either 3.5-10 or 2.5-8 but I haven’t had any issues so far. I need to do the measurements and try out the cds but haven’t taken the time yet

Nothing wrong with VX-3HDs.

The only thing I'd note is that you're likely to have more use for the wide than the tele setting of the scope on big game, and the minimum magnification may feel a bit limited. The 4.5-14 is probably fine, but it could be worth also considering the 3.5-10X or 2.5-8X, which will still get you all the distance you need for hunting, while having a more-useful low end and a more-forgiving eye box.

Really wanted to like it but zero started to wander after not many rounds, maybe 50 animals shot, and I couldn't be bothered checking zero each time before a hunt so got rid of it.
