I was about to clean my wife's filthy Leupold binoculars and found they're made in China, how long has this been going on? These are 3-4 years old. 20220105_142150.jpg

Yup. Leupold imports all of their binoculars and non Gold Ring spotters right now. The low end of the lines are made in China. The upper end is made in Japan.

The Gold Ring line is assembled in the US with Japanese glass.

I wasn't aware of that. I bought these to be a cheaper pair for the wife. I've never been big on Leupold products but always thought they were USA to the bone.

I believe their scopes are made in the US that’s why the shirt says “where’s your scope made”
Binoculars are just 2 scopes taped together with no reticle so leupold is false advertising

You'd probably be surprised what "made in the USA" actually is.

Yeah they’re assembled here. Not made. I genuinely thought Leupold was 100% American made with American parts since they like to fly the “made in USA” flag so high. That shirt even implies it. Talking to them proved me wrong. Why not say “where’s your scope assembled?” I guess it doesn’t have that same patriotic tune.

Design and final assembly is in Oregon. Most parts for scopes and binos and RF's come from Japan and China.

The whole "japanese glass is bad" argument is hilarious. Quality Japanese glass is some of the best in the world. Pay attention to who makes the glass next time you go get your eyes checked (80% chance it's Topcon Japanese glass). Pay attention to the next time you see a construction crew working and see a surveying total station (90% chance it's Topcon, Sokkia, or Nikon (Trimble) Japanese glass).

In other spaces, where utmost quality glass is needed far more than hunting scopes and binoculars, Japanese glass shines right along with the European brands in those same spaces (Leica, Geomax, etc.)

Not saying that Leupold is using the same quality of Japanese glass as the aforementioned brands, but dismissing a product because it uses "Japanese Glass" is a complete joke.

So where did you gather your facts from? They don’t cnc their scopes, caps, turrets, and internals there?

I called and talked to them. They said their glass and a few other internals on their scopes come
From Japan and Europe. Binos and spotters below Santiam are from China.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t care if companies import materials and parts. I get that. My issue is when they wear the “Made in America” badge when it’s only partly true. And only partly true on a select few items.

It’s been known for years that their binos are not made here. As far as glass goes I don’t know any company in the US that uses glass from here. The scopes are properly in the neighborhood of 95% made here.
